Vincent Joseph Diers, 83 of Mount Vernon, died Friday, May 13, 2011, at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House, Hiawatha. Vincent's Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m., Monday at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Mount Vernon by the Reverend Rodney Allers. Vincent's visitation will be 3:30 until 6:30 p.m., Sunday, at Morgan Funeral and Cremation Choices, Mount Vernon Chapel, where the Scripture Service begins at 6:30 p.m. Vincent's burial will be in Campbell Cemetery, rural Cedar Rapids. Survivors include his beloved wife Judy of fifty-five years; his daughters: Elizabeth (Jason) Stepien, Barre, Massachusetts, Mary K. Diers, Marion, and Diana (John) McLaughlin, Marion; two grandchildren: Jason Thomas Stepien, II, and Sofia Rose McLaughlin; brother Charles Diers of San Ramon, California; two sisters: Helen Herrick, Dubuque and Mary Smith, Mount Vernon; and many nieces and nephews. Vince was preceded in death by his parents and sister Theresa Tikal. Vince was born on the family farm near Colesburg to William F. and Rose Mary (Pottebaum) Diers on August 16, 1927. He married Judith Glick on July 23, 1955 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Colesburg. Shortly after their marriage, the couple moved to Walnut Creek, California and had three daughters. Vince joined the Carpenters Union Local 36 and worked all over the Bay Area for over twenty-four years. In 1979, he moved his family back to Iowa and became a member of Carpenter's Union Local 308. He was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Mount Vernon. Vince's faith and family were most important in his life. His love of wood working can be seen in the many beautiful hand crafted items he created for his family and friends.
