Scott Koppenhaver, 69, of Monticello, Iowa, passed away on Friday, September 11, 2026, at his home. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Stewart Baxter Funeral & Memorial Services, Mount Vernon, Iowa, is assisting the family with arrangements.

Scott was born on March 28, 1957, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the son of Donald and Margaret (Martin) Koppenhaver. He was united in marriage to Lori VanAmburg on July 14, 1979.

Scott worked as a CNC operator for Goss and Dillman Equipment. He recently retired and loved being “busier” in retirement than when he was working. A lifelong fisherman, he shared his passion with his parents, wife, and children over the years, creating endless memories of time spent together in the boat and on the riverbanks.

Family was always first for Scott. He was grateful to live close to his sons to enjoy the ordinary moments that came with it: grilling out, lending a hand, or simply spending time together. He enjoyed daily phone calls with his daughter during her commute home from work and was excited to have her and her family move closer to home. He made a point to gather with his siblings for family events whenever he could.

He took great interest in following sports at all levels, whether it was watching his 3-year-old grandson take the field; following his great-nieces through their middle school and high school basketball journeys; cheering on his granddaughter in middle school softball and volleyball; or keeping up with the Iowa Hawkeyes and professional leagues. It has to be mentioned that he was an unwavering, lifelong Chicago Bears fan.

He found joy in the everyday and in not taking life too seriously. He had a well-known appreciation for sweet treats, a sense of adventure, and a love for a good laugh. His laugh was unmistakable, and it is one of the many things that will be dearly missed about him.

Scott is survived by his wife, Lori Koppenhaver; sons, Jeremy Koppenhaver, Tyler Koppenhaver, Korey Koppenhaver, Jenna (Brice) Steiner, and Elliot Koppenhaver; grandchildren; Kaydence Koppenhaver and Ripon Steiner; siblings, Gary (Kay) Koppenhaver, Karol (Aaron Franck) Koppenhaver, and Ann (Mike O’Brien) Koppenhaver; and mother-in-law, Shirley VanAmburg.

Scott was preceded in death by his parents and paternal and maternal grandparents.

    I met Scott in 1975 and we played softball together. He was a great fun loving guy. My heart goes out to all of you at this difficult time. I will keep you all in my prayers.

  4. Scott always had a huge smile and a hug to go with it when seeing him! He treated my babies like his own grandbabies! Forever thankful for meeting him and having the chance to know such a great guy! ❤️

  5. Sorry to hear about Scott!!!! He was one of my classmates, Classmates of 76!!! Got to talk to Scott at our 50th Class Reunion on July 11th 2026 ,WE talked about old times and he was so cheerful!!!
    He will be greatly missed!!!!!

  6. I have so many special memories of Scott, Lori and their family. I remember feeling Jeremy kick while Lori was pregnant, and having the biggest crush on Scott when I was little! ❤️ I loved growing up with all of their kids and spending time at the farmhouse. Scott was such a big part of so many happy childhood memories, and I’ll always treasure those times. Sending so much love to Lori and the entire family. Scott will be deeply missed. Thinking of you all.

  7. The Koppenhavers lived just across the street in Mount Vernon growing up… best memory was playing on a 13 year old all-star Babe Ruth team that won the state championship. He was our second basemen.

  8. My dearest and best friend Lori, my heart goes out to you and your family. I can’t tell you how sad I am for your loss. I didn’t get to know Scott well, but I know he made a great choice when he married Lori in 1979. You have a wonderful family with so many memories to look back on. Words alone can’t relay my deepest sympathy but I hope they will comfort you at this time. Bless you.
