James Dohmen

James Anthony Dohmen, 92, of Mechanicsville, Iowa, passed away on Tuesday, February 22, 2022. Visitation: 4-7 p.m. on Friday, February 25, 2022, at Stewart Baxter Funeral & Memorial Services, Mount Vernon. Funeral Mass: 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, February 26, 2022, at St. Mary Catholic Church, Mechanicsville. Burial with military honors will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery, Mechanicsville. James was born March 22, 1929, to Frank and Emma (Backes) Dohmen near Lindsay, Nebraska. He grew up on family farm southeast of Lindsay, with six siblings and attended Holy Family School, Lindsay. Jim was drafted into US Marines in 1951, and served on front lines in Korea. He lived in California after Korea, then returned to farming in Nebraska. On June 16, 1953, he married Dorothy Ann Iwansky at St. Bonaventure in Columbus, Nebraska. They moved to Iowa in 1956, worked as a hired hand until 1961, then moved into Mechanicsville. Jim worked at Nye Grain & Feed, and later Cedar Johnson Farm Service in Mechanicsville until he 'retired' in 1992. He then enjoyed helping his oldest son, Alan, farm until age 79. Jim enjoyed playing cards, fixing things, remodeling their home, hunting, playing cards, loved visitors and sharing a beer or two, and loved to tease and joke. Jim was member of Busch-Dennis American Legion for over 60 years, volunteer for Meals on Wheels and Mechanicsville Care Center. Jim and Dorothy were members of St. Mary Catholic Church, and Swinging Squares square dancing. They enjoyed the Chicago Cubs together and lots of rummy. He loved and was proud of the kids, especially grandkids and great grandkids, always had one or more on his lap. Jim said that his seven children were his best investment. He was preceded in death by parents; wife, son (Mark); sisters, Lucille Busselman, Imelda Livingston, Mary Lou Pruess; and brother, Donald. Survivors include his children, Alan (Janet) Dohmen, Frank (Gloria) Dohmen, Edna (Jeff) Houseman, Bob (Sheryl) Dohmen, Karen (Scott) Eaker, Carolyn (Don) Carstensen, and Brian (Cassie) Dohmen; 17 grandchildren, Mark and Randy Dohmen, Ryan, Kyle, and Jacob Dohmen, Cam, Chad Houseman, and Lindsay Houseman Kremer, Josh and Eric Dohmen, Jarryd and Derek Eaker, Andy, Clayton, and Sam Carstensen, and Liam and Ivan Dohmen; 18 great-grandchildren, Caleb, Connor, Bella, Lila, Finn, Macy, Lauren, William, Grant, Charlotte, Lily, Emma, Ethan, Ami, Lorelai, Emmett, Patrick, and Henry; sister, Ethelene Lux; brother, Melvin (Mary Lee) Dohmen; brother-in-law, Dick Pruess; sisters-in-law, Janet Dohmen and Elaine Geilenkirchen; and many extended family members and friends. Memorials may be directed to the Mechanicsville Fire & Ambulance or St. Mary Catholic Church.   8. Dolmen family, I have SO many memories of your Dad. I am Mary Hanna Dreckman, and I remember your Dad being a younger version of our Dad, always tricks played on us and some form of torment. I remember your growing family living in the mobile home in our back yard and playing with you older siblings. Your parents always had the BIGGEST garden, and I remember your Dad always knew the exact day to plant potatoes. I know your Dad and Mom are now reunited in Heaven and are dancing away. My deepest sympathy to all of you. Both your parents lived full Blessed lives.
