Helen Theresa Carlson, 98, a resident of Heritage Care Center, died there on Monday, February 2, 2009, following a short illness. Services: 9:30 a.m. Friday, February 6, 2009, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Cedar Rapids, by the Rev. Christopher Podhajsky. Friends may call today (Thursday) from 5-8 p.m. at Stewart Baxter Funeral & Memorial Services, Cedar Rapids, with a vigil service at 6:30 p.m. Burial: St. Michael Cemetery, Norway, Iowa. Survivors include her son, Joseph Carlson; daughter, Marilu Busch; adopted daughter, Teresa Cook; brother, Joe Gessner; and sister, Mary Pisney, all of Cedar Rapids. Also surviving are 16 grandchildren, 5 step grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren, 4 step great grandchildren, 13 great great grandchildren, and 3 step great great grandchildren. Helen was born March 25, 1910, in Watkins, Iowa, the daughter of George and Mary Ann (Voss) Gessner. She married Gilmore Carlson on August 22, 1935. He died March 23, 1974. Helen worked many places over the years. Family meant a lot to her and she will be greatly missed by everyone. Her faith and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren were very important to Helen. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; her daughter, Lucille Pospisil; and two brothers, George and Andrew Gessner.
