Gerald Dale DeWoody, 85, of Cedar Rapids, died on Saturday, August 20, 2016. Funeral Service: 10 a.m. on Saturday, August 27, 2016, at Stewart Baxter Funeral & Memorial Services, Cedar Rapids. Visitation: 5-8 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home. Burial: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery, Cedar Rapids., with military honors. Survivors include his good friend, Bill Dixon, nieces and nephews, Heidi (Tim) Hemmis of Cedar Rapids, Julie (Karl) Rosenberg of Cedar Rapids, Tami (Dan) Drexler of Swisher, Gwen (Todd) Garretson of Williamsburg, and Mollie (Shane) Grosse of Denver, Iowa, Brad (Bonnie) DeWoody of Marion, Todd (Emily) DeWoody of Florida; sister-in-law, Janet (Walt) Schulz of Marion; many great nieces and nephews including, Jess Hemmis of Peoria, Illinois; and his dog, Max. Jerry was born June 17, 1931, in Coggon, Iowa, the son of John and Nina (Cooper) DeWoody. After graduating high school, he served for three years in the U.S. Army. Jerry has a varied working career from electrical assembly at Collins Radio, machinist at LeFebure, to window design at Killian's and retiring from assembling duck calls at Hunter Specialties. He was great at tinkering and working with his hands. He enjoyed building a kit car, working on his home, NASCAR, music, and his dogs. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Wallace; and sister, Betty (Harold) Higgins. The family extends a very special thank you for the care and compassion for Jerry from UnityPoint Hospice, especially Sue, Dana, and Bobbie Jo. Memorial may be directed to the family.

  3. The thought that always comes to mind when I think of Jerry is back in the winter of 76 or 77. The water pipes had frozen in my house and I had a business come out to unfreeze them. In the course of doing so they actually burnt up the wiring to the house and we lost all electricity, no lights and no heat. My wife and baby daughter we’re already getting cold. I called Jerry and he drove up from Cedar Rapids to Waterloo and spent most of the day rewiring everything that had burnt up behind the fuse box. Before the day was done we had electricity and heat again thanks to Jerry. That’s just the kind of guy he was. Now he’s on the other side and in no pain, just waiting for Bill and the rest of his loved ones to come join him when it’s time…
