Gary A. Viter, 76, of Mount Vernon, Iowa, passed away on Thursday, May 28, 2026, at St. Luke’s Hospital, Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Visitation will be held from 4:00-6:00 p.m., on Saturday, June 6, 2026, at Stewart Baxter Funeral & Memorial Services, Mount Vernon. After the visitation, please join the family at Yock’s Landing, to have a drink in Gary’s honor and share stories.
Gary was born on Jun 1, 1949, in Cedar Rapids, the son of Ward and Mary (Brawner) Viter. He was united in marriage to LeAnn Oliphant on June 5, 1971, in Troy Mills, Iowa.
Gary graduated from Mount Vernon High School in 1967. He worked for the Iron Workers Local 89. In retirement he worked part time for Wears Auctioneering. Gary enjoyed going antiquing, collecting and restoring old fans, going to Wisconsin to fish, watching Iowa Sports, the St. Louis Cardinals, Chicago Bears, and shooting pool with a beer. Gary was never a stranger to anyone.
Gary is survived by his daughters, Stephanie Viter of Mount Vernon, and Brandi (Lee Pitlik) Viter-Pitlik of Mount Vernon; grandsons, Benjamin Hopkins and Henry Pitlik; sister, Cindy (Paula Calmer) Viter; brother-in-law, John Heims; and nephews, Gary Lee Heims and Jason Heims.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and sister, Marsha Heims.
