Elsie M. Pisarik

Elsie Margaret Sedlacek Pisarik, 96, of Mount Vernon, died Wednesday, October 8, 2008, at Hallmark Care Center, following a brief illness. Funeral Mass, 10:30 a.m., Monday at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Mount Vernon. Family and friends may call Sunday from 3:00 until 7:00 p.m. at Morgan Funeral Home, Mount Vernon Chapel. Burial in St. John the Baptist Catholic Cemetery, Lisbon. Elsie was born October 6, 1912, in Newport Township near Iowa City, Iowa, and was the youngest child of John and Mary (Hudachek) Sedlacek. She attended country school in Newport Township and graduated from high school in Iowa City, where she especially enjoyed taking art classes. As a young woman, she was employed for a time in the kitchen of the Mad Hatter Tearoom, a popular restaurant of the time in downtown Iowa City. Elsie married William "Bill" Pisarik on October 2, 1940, at St. Wenceslaus Church, Iowa City. They lived on farms near Mount Vernon until moving into town in 1970. Mr. Pisarik died in 1987. Over a period of 35 years, Elsie cleaned in a number of homes in Mount Vernon. For about 15 years, she volunteered as a bingo helper at Hallmark Care Center. Vegetable and flower gardening were among her favorite activities. She was a long-time member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. For the past six years, Elsie made her home at Hallmark Care Center in Mount Vernon. The family wishes to thank the Hallmark staff for the loving and compassionate care they provided while she resided there. Elsie dearly loved her family and her many friends, who returned the love in countless ways. The sparkle in her eyes and wonderful smile greeted everyone she met. Elsie is survived by her daughters, Bonnie Pisarik of Cedar Rapids and Nancy Mulder of Grand Rapids, Michigan; son-in-law Dennis Mulder; step-grandchildren Gwen (David) Heatley of Grand Rapids, Michigan, and Dwayne (Pam) Mulder of Santa Rosa, California; seven step-great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and special friend Joyce Steffen of Cedar Rapids. Preceding her in death were a sister, Emma (Arlo) Jedlicka, and brothers Joseph P. (Jeannette) Sedlacek, Frank (Loretta) Sedlacek, and Otto (Irene) Sedlacek. Bonnie, Nancy and families, I surely was saddened to read about the passing of Elsie. Bonnie, I have such fond and happy memories of coming to play at your farm when we were young. The comment about the “twinkle in her eyes” surely did truly describe Elsie. What a kind and caring person. I would run into your mom at functions and she just never seemed to change, always sweet and concerne about everyone. What a fine example of what we should all aspire to be like in our life here on earth. Please know that you are in my prayers but know angels sang Elsie to heaven. She is most likely rejoicing and catching up with all the friends and neighbors, as she was such a great neighbor to Aunt Ann Dosedlo. You are in my thoughts and prayers. It is a hard time when you lose your mom, but know you will soon smile when thinking of all the happy times you had with your mom. As long as you remember her, she will always be around.
