Justin was preceded in death by his parents; sons, James and John, and an infant daughter Mary; and his beloved sister, Mary Evelyn Dunn.
Justin was born July 1, 1921, near Elkader, Iowa, the son of Thomas C. and Grace (Looney) Dunn. He graduated from Loras College and the University of Iowa College of Dentistry. He was married to Mildred Golinvaux in 1944, and together they raised four boys. Justin served two tours stateside as a dentist in the U.S. Navy before and during the Korean Conflict, and during this time played on the Navy golf team. Upon his return to Cedar Rapids, Justin purchased the practice owned by Dr. Byron McKeeby, the model for the farmer with the pitchfork in the famed American Gothic painting by Grant Wood. Dr. Dunn loved the practice of dentistry and treasured the great friendships he maintained with so many of his patients throughout his years of practice in Cedar Rapids, which spanned about 50 years. Even now, more than twenty five years after his retirement, his family members are still greeted by former patients who remember Justin not only as a superb dentist but a kind, caring, and generous health care provider.
Justin spent many happy hours with his family, and his sons and their families describe him as a superb father, grandfather, and great-grandfather ' roles he cherished. For many years he enjoyed the company of his great longtime friends, Dr. John Roalson and Carl Nelson. Together these three spent many years fishing, hunting, and playing golf and bridge. In recent years Justin valued spending time with his great friend and golf partner, Marge Jacobs, who was a lively and positive force in his life. Justin will be remembered by his family and many friends as a warm, kind, generous, and fun-loving man, always quick with a smile and full of encouragement and praise for the accomplishments of others.
Memorials are suggested to St. Matthew Catholic Church.
Dr.Dunn was my dentist from the time I had my first check-up until I was in my early Thirties. Awesome dentist, great guy. I share his story about the man from American Gothic every time I go to the dentist. Great story!!! May you rest in peace. Chris Zeadow
Justin was my dentist, as well as my children’s in the 60s-70s. We all loved him in that capacity. Many years later when I married Bud Hunter, Justin became a good friend. We played many games of golf with him at Kelly Greens as well as with the Grasshoppers all over Eastern Iowa. We loved his laugh, his love for the game of golf, and his kind and generous spirit. I will miss him. Bud, I’m sure, has greeted him in heaven with a handshake and a hug. I’m sorry for your family’s great loss.
Greg and Wendy,
