Doug was born August 18, 1954, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, to Kenneth and Genevieve Kleppe Schott, the youngest of four children, and grew up on the family farm near Coggon. Doug attended Coggon Elementary and then North Linn High School and later moved to Cedar Rapids. In 2002, he returned to the family farm to live in a mobile home. He enjoyed life in the country, watching the birds at the bird feeders, looking out at the timber to see the deer and other wildlife. When he was still able, he also enjoyed fishing and always tinkering with something. Doug loved his cats and dogs, especially his beloved dog Lacy, who was his constant companion and co-pilot.
Doug is survived by his daughter Melissa Doyl (Shawn) and her sons, Austin and Colton; brother, Marland (Peg); sister-in-law, Cheryl of Coggon; and sister Diane Harding of Dalston, England. Also surviving are nieces and nephews, Kim Doyle (David), Ed Schott, Jr. (Jennifer), Mari Goeke (Ron), David Schott (Dawn), Molly Cook (Russ), Megan Toland (Josh), Alex Harding, and David Harding, and their families.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Edward; brother-in-law, Michael, and his beloved dog, Lacy.
The family would like to thank Doug's care provider Jessica Quinn, Hospice of Mercy, the staff at Winslow House, and all who cared for him during his surgeries and illnesses over the years.
In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established.

For the family of Doug Schott, as the years and miles separated us, it is always amazing how the loss, and time are shortened by loving memories. May God’s grace and mercies welcome you home.

Sending sympathy to you and the entire Schott family. What a blessing that you were able to come back and spend some quality time with Doug.
I have one vivid memory of Doug at dad’s station. He must have been about 5. He was a busy little man, into everything, wanting everything like most 5 year olds and you dad was so patient and kept telling him no. Doug was finally getting the message and he hauled off and kicked your dad in the shin. Your dad reached down and rubbed his leg a little, and the looked up at my dad and smiled and said, “feisty little cuss, ain’t he”?
Kenny had the patience of Job.

Sending sincere condolences to all of the Shott family from all of us here in the UK. I never had the pleasure to meet Doug , but heard so much about him from Diane. He gave the impression of someone who”ploughed his own furrow”-I don’t know if that’s an expression that’s used in the US? Basically to follow your own star, and to heck with the consequences!! That only works if you have backup. That came in the love and support of the family, which he had in droves. The last few months have been hard for him I’m sure, but the family love for him was always there. That’s what good families do !! God speed Doug. Love to all the family from us all in the UK❤️
