Robert Gaines

Robert J. Gaines, 91, of Mount Vernon, Iowa, died peacefully at home on Thursday, November 2, 2017. Funeral Service: 3 p.m. on Thursday, November 9, 2017, at First Presbyterian Church, Mount Vernon, by Rev. Lori Wunder. Visitation: 1-3 p.m. at the church on Thursday. Burial with military honors will be at the Mount Vernon Memorial Cemetery. Survivors include his children, Gary Gaines, Pamela (Jonathan) Sabin, and Cindy (Mike) Hall; grandchildren, Rebecca, Vanessa, Tara, Mick, and Julian; and eleven great grandchildren. Bob was born on October 31, 1926, in Marion, Iowa, the son of George and Verdia (Grommen) Gaines. After graduating from high school, Bob served in the US Army. On April 2, 1948, he married Dorothy Krumm in Cedar Rapids. Early in his career he worked with his father operating their quarry and excavating business, G.W. Gaines & Son. Later he joined with his son as Gaines Design and Construction. Bob's vision and work can be found in many buildings and projects in the area. Bob was very active in the Mount Vernon community, serving as member and chief of the Mount Vernon Fire Department, member of Hahn Howard American Legion Post 480, and an elder at First Presbyterian Church. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Dorothy; son, Steven; and granddaughter, Sharon. Memorials are suggested to the family to be used for a memorial bench. Bob was one of the finest men I know.He is my classmate Pam’s Dad, but I met him as a fellow Legion member, and got to know him over the years.He was in a happy if not downright jovial mood almost every time I met him. Quick with a joke, or funny anecdote from days past and friendly to all he met. He will truly be missed and was an example to us younger guys on how to age gracefully.
