(Mildred) Arlene Platner Ross, 81 of Mechanicsville, died Wednesday, June 16, 2004 at Lutheran Homes Society, Muscatine, from complications of Alzheimer's disease. Funeral services will be Saturday 10:00 a.m. at the Mechanicsville United Methodist Church conducted by Reverend Linda Stransky. Friends may call Friday from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Morgan Funeral and Cremation Choices, Mount Vernon Chapel. The Eastern Star service will begin at 7:00 p.m. following the visitation. Burial of the cremated remains will be Monday 11:00 a.m. at Rose Hill Cemetery, Mechanicsville. Surviving Arlene in death are two daughters: Kaylene and husband Terry Worby, their sons Kyle and Troy of Mechanicsville, and Jo Ann and husband Randy Garrier of Garden City, Kansas; two sisters, Edith Puffer of Mechanicsville and Helen Farrington of Olin, and a brother Herbert Platner of Mechanicsville. Preceding Arlene in death were her parents and husband Bob. Arlene was born October 24, 1922, the second child of Howard and Hazel Miller Platner. She graduated from Mechanicsville High School in 1940 and married James Robert Ross, June 14, 1942 at Cedar Rapids. Bob died June 18, 1986. In 1941 she graduated from Cedar Rapids Business College and was employed during World War II in the offices at Link Belt Speeder, Cedar Rapids. Arlene and Bob worked side by side, raising their children and farming in rural Mechanicsville. Arlene was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She will be remembered for her cooking, baking and love of the outdoors. Arlene was a member of Evangeline Chapter O.E.S. Chapter #393 of Stanwood and the American Legion Auxiliary. A memorial fund has been established to benefit several organizations.
