Donald Overbaugh

Donald R. Overbaugh, 90, of Mechanicsville, died Wednesday, April 7, 2004, in St. Luke's Hospital, Cedar Rapids from a brief illness. Funeral services for Don will be 10:30 a.m., Saturday at the First Presbyterian Church Mechanicsville by the Reverend Linda Stransky. The family will greet friends from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. Friday at Morgan Funeral and Cremation Choices Mount Vernon Chapel where the Masonic service will begin at 7:00 p.m. Burial will be at Rose Hill Cemetery, Mechanicsville. Surviving Don are four children: Donald M. of Swisher, Glenn and wife Penny of Bettendorf, Alvin and wife Cathy of Polk City, and Marilyn and husband Dale Burrows of Des Moines; five grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, and two great grand children. Besides his parents, preceding Don in death were his wife Helen, a brother Horace, and a sister Florence Spry. Don was born April 4, 1914, in rural Mechanicsville, the son of Cecil and Anna Rhoads Overbaugh. He graduated from Mechanicsville High School in 1931. Don farmed with his brother and father as a young man. He married Helen Mae Stanerson, a Mechanicsville High School teacher, on February 1, 1939 at Conroy. They resided together and raised their children on the family's century farm until Helen's death in 2001. He loved the land and actively farmed until age 84. Don continued to manage the farm until his death. Don was a member and former Trustee of the First Presbyterian Church of Mechanicsville. He was a fifty-year member of Patmos Masonic Lodge #155 of Mechanicsville and was a current member of Fremont Masonic Lodge #616, Stanwood. Don will always be remembered for his vast memory and genuine interest in local history and people. He had a remarkable ability to recall facts and dates. A generous man, Don was a true gentleman. A memorial fund in Don's honor has been established to the First Presbyterian Church, 408 First Street East, Mechanicsville, IA 52306, or charity of donor's choice.
