William "Bill" Woods, 84, of Mechanicsville, died Wednesday, April 22, 2009, at the Mechanicsville Care Center, after a long illness. Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m., Monday, at the Mechanicsville Presbyterian Church, Reverend Bill Harnish, presiding. Friends may call Sunday from 3:00 until 6:00 p.m., at the Morgan Funeral Home, in Mt Vernon. Graveside services will be the following day at Rose Hill Cemetery, Mechanicsville, with military rites. Surviving Bill is his wife of sixty-one years, Virginia, of Mechanicsville; and four children: Dick and his wife Dr. Rebecca Fritzsche of Ames, Karen and her husband Col. Mike Damron, Ret. of Navarre, FL, Kent and his wife Evie of Pewaukee, WI, Mary Lea, of Atlanta; his grandchildren include: Katie and her husband Kurt Sylvan, Will Woods, Allison and her husband Jason Bailey, Brian and his wife Kelly and their daughter Kayleigh Damron, Mark and Scott Damron, David and Shanon Woods.He is also survived by his brother-in-law Harold Eiler of Tipton, and sister-in-law, Barbara Wilson Skerry of Freehold, NJ, a niece and several nephews. Preceding Bill in death were his parents Weldon W. and Evelyn Glasgow Woods; his uncle W.D. Glasgow; his sister, Neola Eiler; a niece, Carol Eiler; and his brother-in-law, Herb Skerry. Bill was born November 1, 1924 on the family farm south of Mechanicsville. He graduated from Tipton High School in 1941 and attended Tipton Junior College. Bill served in the U.S. Army during World War II, and served as driver for Gen. Wm Clayton Morrison. Bill was a member and past commander of the Busch-Dennis Legion Post #309 and member of the Masonic Lodge. He was a long-time member of the board of directors of the Mechanicsville Telephone Company. In his career, he farmed both the Maple Knoll and Sunny Slope acreage, which have been in the family for over 150 years. Bill also enjoyed playing Santa Claus for St. Luke's Hospital, Lindale Plaza, Bridge Community Bank, the nursing home, friends and family. A memorial fund will be established in his honor.
