William (Bill) H. Hunse III was born June 27, 1944, in Chicago, Illinois, and passed away peacefully in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, on May 26, 2024. He was preceded in death by his parents, William H. Hunse Sr. and Joan (Sheridan) Hunse. He was raised with his three siblings, JoAnn Tom (Denise) and Susan (deceased) in Bellwood, Illinois. William was married to Ruth (Paffenbach) Hunse (deceased) for 56 years. Bill always grinned when speaking of meeting Ruth for the first time while on his job as a lifeguard at Memorial Park Pool in Bellwood, Illinois. Bill and Ruth had two children, Ryan (Leslie) and Kirsten. He often spoke with pride and enthusiasm of his four grandchildren, Will, Caroline, Anja, and Carys. He will be greatly missed by sisters-in-law, Mary Beard (Bill), and Denise Hunse; nieces, Heather Dreher (Gary) and Kim (Hunse) Murr; as well as his nephew, Peter Hunse; and great niece and nephew, Hailey and Zack Hunse.
Bill attended District 209 public schools, Lincoln Elementary and Roosevelt Junior High in Bellwood, Illinois. He was in the first class to have attended all four years at the newly built Proviso West High School where he was a member of the Varsity Swim team and Aquatic Staff. He also took a mechanical drawing at Proviso West that piqued his interest in architecture. The class was taught by Mr. Bob Milano, with whom he has kept in touch for over sixty years. Bill also achieved the revered rank of Eagle Scout and often spoke of his adventures and life skills he learned as a scout.
Bill started his college life at the University of Illinois in Champaign, Illinois. He and Ruth moved to Arizona when he was accepted into the architecture school at Arizona State University. He earned his degree in Architecture and went on to start his own design build firm, Architectural Team III.
From his early years, Bill was an avid photographer - he loved his cameras, lenses, slides, and eventually digital images. He was obsessive in cataloging all of them so he could retrieve 'just the right shot' when needed. He was also passionate about soccer and, along with his close friend Jim Burgess, founded the Tempe Thanksgiving Soccer Tournament in 1979. The inaugural event featured twenty-eight teams. Over the next fourteen years, the tournament experienced significant growth, eventually attracting over 400 teams, including some international teams.
After his retirement Bill and Ruth moved to join their daughter, Kirsten and her family in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
He leaves family, many long-time, and lifelong friends behind. Bill loved a laugh. Before the internet he frequently called his dad and brother on a regular basis to share a joke or simply share a funny story. Bill never met a stranger. While attending any event where people gathered, he would always find someone with whom he could engage and linger. Soon, he'll be reunited with all those that preceded him, and so the laughs will continue.
