Walter Stromer

Dr. Walter F. "Walt" Stromer, Ph. D., 84 of Mount Vernon, died Thursday May 12, 2005 at Hallmark Care and Rehabilitation Center, Mount Vernon from cancer. Walt was born June 11, 1920 at Iowa City, and was adopted at six months by Henry and Anna Stromer, Blue Hill, Nebraska. Walt attended school at Blue Hill. In 1939 after the death of his father, he attended Business College in Hastings, where he and Vivian Woods met. They married ten years later. He worked two years as a clerk-stenographer for the government in Washington D.C. and in Arapahoe, Nebraska. In January 1943 he started Army Signal Corps training and went on active duty in October of that year. January 6, 1945 while serving with the 87th Infantry Division, near Bastogne, Belgium, he was blinded when a shell hit a tree and sent wood splinters in all directions. He was in the hospital and rehab center until November that year. January, he graduated from Hastings in June of 1949. He and Viv were married and then went to the University of Denver for four years. In the fall of 1953 they came to Mount Vernon and Cornell College, where he taught speech and related courses for 32 years. They adopted two children. Anne came to them at age one, from Greece, and was killed in an auto accident when she was twenty-five. Walter is survived by his wife Vivian of Mount Vernon, a son Gary and his wife Diana of Cedar Rapids and their children: Joshua and Kyle in Wisconsin, and Dillon of Cedar Rapids. Walter requests no flowers or potted plants. Memorial contributions may be made to the Lutheran World Relief, St. Louis, Missouri, 63122-7295, or people may contribute to a charity of their choice. Memorial services 5:30 p.m., Sunday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Mount Vernon by the Reverend Mark Gefaller. The family will greet friends 4:30 p.m. until service time in the church.   1. I have never seen Mr. Walter but I came to know about him through one of his speeches in given in Indiana. I was inspired by what he said. I was searching about his life and story when I came to know about him. I feel extremely shocked and pray for the peace of his soul. May god give you strength to endure this tragidy Amen
