Velma June Petersen Collins, 75, of Mechanicsville, died Saturday, May 2, 2009, in Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House, Hiawatha from cancer. Funeral services 11:00 a.m. Wednesday at Morgan Funeral and Cremation Choices, Mount Vernon Chapel, by Celebrant Mary Morgan. Friends may call Tuesday, from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m., at the chapel. Burial will be in Mount Vernon Memorial Cemetery. Surviving Velma are her daughter Sandy Prull, of Cedar Rapids and four grandchildren: Penny Prull of North Liberty, Gunnery Sgt. Brian (Cynthia) Prull of California, Jessica Heising of Davenport, and Alex Heising of Cedar Rapids. Also surviving is a sister Lorene Hartwig, Anamosa; five brothers: Lloyd (Betty) Petersen, Anamosa, Paul (Neena) Petersen, Manchester, Richard (Bonnie) Petersen, Martelle, Douglas Petersen, Springville, and Dewey (Beckie) Petersen, Ely. Preceding Velma in death were her parents, Dewey A. and Nellie M. Hurt Petersen, a daughter Gloria Collins Heising, son-in-law Larry Prull, a sister Helen Petersen who died in infancy, and a brother Fred Petersen. Velma was born June 26, 1933 in Martelle. She graduated from Martelle High School in 1950. She married her husband of forty-nine years John L. Collins, April 1, 1950 in Solon. Velma worked for thirty-seven years for Rockwell Collins as a CNC Programmer, retiring in 1989. Most of her adult life she lived in Mount Vernon before moving back to Mechanicsville in 1995. Velma was the "most even-tempered person on the planet." Velma loved animals, especially dogs. She spent a lot of time in the outdoors, gardening, fishing, mushroom hunting, and at their trailer at Frenchmen's Landing, north of Prairie du Chien. Velma was talented with crafts: stained glass, oil painting, and making garden stepping-stones. Crossword puzzles, collecting calendars, Sudoko puzzles, and reading were favorite pastimes.
