Steve Pudil

April 12, 1945 ~ April 13, 2020

Steven Arthur Pudil, 75, of Swisher, passed away surrounded with love and his family by his side on Monday, April 13, 2020, at his son and daughter-in-law's home following an eighteen months long battle with cancer. Survivors include his three sons, Robin (Gena) Pudil, Kurt Pudil, and Chad (Kris) Pudil; grandchildren, Kody (Rachelle) Pudil, Kourtney (Brandon) Janss, Wes Pudil, Josie Pudil, and Jayce Pudil; great-grandchildren, Charleigh, Daxton and Austyn Pudil, and Ellison Janss; nieces, Gretchen (David) Wettendorf, Val Pudil, and Cori (Mike) Olinger; and best friends, Ron Eden, Jim Bys, and Dave Chalupsky. Steve was born on April 12, 1945, in Cedar Rapids, the son of Edwin and Irene (Marak) Pudil. He was a 1963 graduate of Prairie High School and went on to serve in the United States Navy. He married Lynn Chmelicek in May of 1969, in Brunswick, Georgia. They later returned to Swisher where they spent the remainder of their lives together, until Lynn's passing in 2017. He missed Lynn desperately since her passing. They loved playing Skip Bo and they are surely having a wonderful reunion playing cards today. Steve owned and operated Swisher Plumbing Company. He was a member of the Swisher American Legion, and a past member of both the Swisher City Council, and the Swisher Fire Department. His favorite pastime was traveling to Wenasaga Lake in Canada over 100 times, where he would go fishing for walleye. His time there included fifteen years as a cabin owner with Lynn. Steve loved spending time with his family. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren meant the world to him. He especially loved his 'Friday Night Date' with Gena to the casino, watching Josie play ball, and reading books to the great-grandkids. He also enjoyed his visits with Barney at the auto shop. In addition to his wife, Steve was preceded in death by his parents, and brother, Brian Pudil. The family expresses their gratitude to UnityPoint St. Luke's Hospice, Rod, Becky, and Dr. William Silverman. Memorials for the Swisher American Legion and the Swisher Fire Department may be directed to the 'Steven A. Pudil Memorial Fund' in care of PO Box 55, Swisher, Iowa, 52338. Since we are unable to be together, please share your support and memories with Steve's family on his tribute wall at www.stewartbaxter.com under obituaries.

  2. Steve was a good man. I heard he was the best card player in Swisher. He has a wonderful family and lived life on his own terms. I will miss him. Best Wishes to the entire family. Kevin Torner

  3. Always enjoyed playing cards with him or against him. Deepest condolences to the whole family!!! Not only a great card player and great fisherman, but even a better man!!!

  4. Steve and Lynn shared many Christmases with us (Len Chmelicek, Bette, Cathi, and Brenda). Steve’s smiles and friendly ways made us feel welcome. When Cathi died unexpectedly recently, Steve came to both the wake and funeral with Chad. Steve is together again with Lynn. Bless them both.

  5. I didn’t really know Steve well, but I am blessed to be able to say that I adore some of the best of him… Robin and Kurt. My heart breaks for you all and I wish that I could give you both a hug. Know that you are on my mind and in my heart. Love you all. Janee and Ron Eisele

  6. Didn’t feel like I knew Steve well, but I will miss our times together at Barny’s shop where we shared memories and had some good talks. My sympathies to his family.

  7. So many good times with Steve and Lynn fishing, vacations, cards, & etc. I remember the day we were fishing and he slipped on a rock, fell in, came up with no glasses, phone, & cigarettes. I’ll never forget the look on his face, then we went home. Then the time Steve, Lynn, Jo,&I were at the Dock of the Bay in Bay St.Louis, Mississippi. We ordered a bucket of crawfish, had to ask how to eat them. We decided that the crawfish are not for us. The four of us were fishing on Wenasaga by the green roof cabin and seen a sea gull eat a fish and then an eagle attacked the gull. We all were witnessing a great nature show. So many good times. I’m sure the Pudil Family has many more good memories to talk about too.

  8. Always enjoyed picking on Steve whenever I had the chance. Deepest Sympathy and hugs to all the family.

  9. I knew Steve when we were growing up in swisher. we played many sports together. good times. my condolences at such a sad time. lance zimmerli

  10. So many great times with Steve and his family. He was a person that you better be paying attention when he spoke because you were about to learn something, at least that is what HE said and he was right. I cherish him for welcoming me into his life and treating me like family. I will never forget the time I was playing Clubs with him and other friends and announced I was pretty sure I was going to get them all, he stayed and after I played the 1st card he said I was set and he was right.

  11. So glad to be able to meet and visit with Steve last fall at Camp Wenasaga and to hear his stories about the camp – great fun to hear his stories.
