Sr. Mary Cephas Wichman RSM

Sister Mary Cephas Wichman, RSM, 84, died on May 6, 2016, at Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, after a brief illness. Services will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, May 10, 2016, at the Mount Mercy University Chapel of Mercy, by Rev. Robert McAleer. Burial will be at the Mount Calvary Cemetery in Cedar Rapids. Friends may call from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Monday, May 9, 2016, at the Chapel of Mercy, with a wake service at 6:30 p.m. Arrangements are with Stewart Baxter Funeral & Memorial Services. Sister Mary Cephas Wichman was born on January 29, 1932, in Waucoma, Iowa, the daughter of Joseph and Huberta (McAleer) Wichman. She attended Our Lady of Mount Carmel Elementary in Lawler, Iowa, and graduated from Waucoma High School in Waucoma, Iowa, in 1949. She entered the Cedar Rapids Regional Community of the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas in 1950. Sister Mary Cephas graduated from Mount Mercy Junior College in 1951; received a B.A. in American History from Mount Mercy College, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, in 1961and a M.A. in American History from Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C. in 1968. Sister Mary Cephas' first ministry was elementary and middle school education. From 1953 to 1969, she taught in the following Eastern Iowa parochial schools: St. John and St. Nicholas in Waterloo, Sacred Heart, Oelwein; St. John, Clarion; St. Joseph, Marion; and All Saints in Cedar Rapids, where she also served as principal from 1969 to 1971. Sister Mary Cephas served as major superior/president of the Sisters of Mercy Cedar Rapids Regional Community from 1971 to 1979. Following her two terms as major superior, she joined the staff of Mount Mercy College as Alumni Director, becoming Vice President of Development in 1985 and Executive Assistant to the President from 2000-2004. Sr. Mary Cephas was involved in many civic organizations and community boards. She faithfully served for thirty-seven years on the Mercy Medical Center Board of Trustees. Upon her retirement in 2004, Sister Mary Cephas was an active volunteer until the time of her death serving as a Board of Trustee Member for the Catherine McAuley Center; Archivist for the Sisters of Mercy in Cedar Rapids; Voting Poll Worker; and continuing development and community outreach work for both Mount Mercy University and the Sisters of Mercy. Sister Mary Cephas was known for her talent in baking and always enjoyed making scones for the annual Catherine McAuley Center tea. She greatly enjoyed taking part in the Cedar Rapids community, spending time with her family and friends and being part of the Sisters of Mercy Community. Sister Mary Cephas was a vowed member of the Sisters of Mercy for 66 years. In addition to the Sisters of Mercy, Sister Mary Cephas is survived by siblings Madonna Einwalter, Fort Atkinson, Iowa; Eleanor Burke, Elma, Iowa; Margaret Regenold, Fairbank, Iowa; Robert Wichman, Cedar Rapids, Iowa; and numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. She was preceded in death by her parents Joseph and Huberta; siblings John, Joseph, Edward and James Wichman, Delores Hubka, and Dorothy Mihm. Memorials may be sent to the Sisters of Mercy at 1125 Prairie Drive NE, Cedar Rapids, Iowa 52402.

  1. Sister Cephas was a wonderful cousin and a very dear friend to Sister Irene Burns, as well as to our parents Francis, and Marilyn and the entire Burns Family. David , Don, Owen, Mary and Ed have great memories of many visits. Her influence in making a difference across this nation during her lifetime can not be measured. Her legacy will live on. Our deepest sympathy to Sisters of Mercy, Madonna and all her family members.

  2. I will most certainly miss Sister Cephas! She as with all my Aunts and Uncles had that great social personality. I wish I had her knowledge of who was family. I don’t believe I’ve ever seen her angry. Love you Sister!!! RIP

  3. Sr. Cephas will be greatly missed for so many reasons, her welcoming smile, her firm handshake, her memory. She always knew everybody’s name and she kept abreast of what everyone was doing and where they were. She was an amazing person who shed a bright light in all our lives. We love you Sr. Cephas.

  4. Sister Mary Cephas was my 7th and 8th grade teacher at St. John’s in Clarion, Iowa. She was one of my favorite teachers during my Catholic School years. RIP, Sister. May you rest in peace.

    • Sister Mary Cephas was my 7 & 8th grade teacher at St john’s also in Clarion, Ia in my years at St john’s, “may you rest in peace” My parents would take her back to CEdar Rapids for the weekend and go and get them and bring them back to Clarion for the oncoming week.

  5. Sr Cephas always had a warm smile & open arms. I remember in my youth attending Wichan reunions at the Fort Gym. Sr Cephas would join us in the baseball games. She was in full habit – reached down between her legs – grab the back hen of her skirt – pull it up between her legs & tuck it in her belt – GAME ON!! Also when she downsized to move into apt/condo, we all had to take a number & select from her many downsizing items. I got the Bing Crosby Christmas CD

  6. We will truly miss you Sister Cephas! Always enjoyed our visits ! I know you will have a greeting at the pearly gates , please let all of them know how much we miss them too! Love you forever!
