November 4, 2011

"Sis" Mary Kathleen Pitlik, 81, of Mount Vernon went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Friday, November 4, 2011 from a sudden illness. Mass of Christian burial will be on Wednesday, November 9, 2011 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Mount Vernon at 10:30 a.m. Visitation will be at Morgan Funeral Choices, Mount Vernon on Tuesday, November 8th from 4:30-7:30 p.m. Burial to take place at Abbe Creek Cemetery. Sis is survived by her three sons; Doug (Barb), Dennis, David (Linda) all of Mount Vernon, eight grandchildren Chad (Devon), Katie (Brad), Kristi, Brandon (Tammy), Brittany (Jackie), Rockland (Veronica), Lee, and Rachael, and 6 great-grandchildren with two little boys on the way. She is also survived by a sister Marilyn (Ray) Overman, sisters-in-law Kay Woods and Mitchell Woods, and brother- in-law Merrill (Harriett) Pitlik, and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Sis was preceded in death by her husband Eddie in 1987, parents Leo and Anna (Young) Woods, her sister Joyce Gardeman, brothers Bob and Chuck Woods. Mary Kathleen Pitlik was born February 8, 1930 at the rural family farm. She was born and raised in Mount Vernon and graduated from Mount Vernon High School with the class of 1947. She married Eddie on September 14, 1949 at St John's in Lisbon, Iowa, and moved to what is now the historical Abbe Creek School house. She lived and loved her farm especially horses, barn cats, and everything else country life entailed. She was out doing yard work and picking Hickory nuts and Walnuts until the day she died. Sis had a very strong faith and was devoted to the members and family at St John the Baptist Catholic Church. She gave her time as a trustee of Franklin township for several years. She was active in the community compiling class composites for Mount Vernon community schools, and volunteering with meals on wheels. Sis was known for her endless energy and generosity - many have benefited from her baked goods and her compassionate nature. As much joy as Sis obtained from farm life and being outdoors, her family and friends were her true devotion. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established. 1. With heartfelt sympathy to each of you at this most difficult time. Sis was a grand lady, one who radiated her love of family, friends, church, life, and living. She truly made a difference in our community and will be greatly missed. May the Lord’s loving arms be around each of you in comfort and support now and in the days ahead. Donna Jacob, MVHS, Ret.

  2. We were truly shocked to hear of Sis’ passing. She was always so gregarious and enjoyed life to its fullest. She didn’t think twice about telling you what she thought, and we loved that about her. She was a great gal and down to earth. No doubt she is in heaven now stirring things up. We will miss her. Cousin John and Sandy

  3. We are sorry to hear of your loss. She was a wonderful person to know and love. Our thoughts and prayers are with your families.

  4. Last year when I returned to Mt. Vernon after 20 years in order to start a business, Sis proved she never forgot my name. She was one of my greatest supporters in the endeavor, even bringing me a surprise treat of homemade pie last fall. The business didn’t work out, but the experience of being treated to the presence of people like Sis made it all worth it. She was a great example and she will be missed. Greg & Stephanie Parish West

  5. I first got to know Sis well through her Godson. I am so saddened to hear of her death. It’s hard to believe that she HAS left us, as she seemed much younger than her years, and she was always so upbeat, happy and supportive to everyone who knew her. She truly enjoyed laughter and life. She will be greatly missed. To her family, we extend our heartfelt sympathy to you. Please know how well-loved Sis was by so many in our little town. Remember that your love for her will help you to endure, and that “the greatest of these is love.”

  6. My sincere sympathy to your family. I remember so well your mom’s infectious smile. Please know you are in my thoughts and prayers.

  7. I’ve known Sis for more than 25 years. Her smile, and her smiling eyes were the first things I noticed about her, and smile she did, so often! Thoughts and prayers with your family at this time of such a sudden loss-We know it’s hard when that happens. Sincerely, Abbi Swanson and Paul Robinson

  8. My sympathy to the Pitlik Family. Sis was always there to lend a hand when needed and brought cheer to all. She will be missed by many.

  9. To all you boys, you know I love you very much and my deepest sympathies go to all of the family, I feel like you are all my brothers to me. I loved your mom like she was mine own. Barry and I both had great respect for her and treasured every moment with her. Bless you all.
