Sarah 'Sally' A. Gorman, 90, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, passed away on Sunday, December 24, 2023, in her home, surrounded by her children after a brief illness. Private family visitation. Graveside Services: Friday, December 29, 2023, at 2:30 p.m. at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Sally (Hegarty) was born February 6, 1933, in Stanwood, Iowa, where she grew up on the farm. She graduated from St. Luke's Nursing School in 1954, and married Charles Gorman from Manchester, Iowa, on November 25, 1955, in Washington D.C.
She enjoyed many years living abroad in England and also in Washington State with her husband while he was in the Air Force. They returned to Cedar Rapids in 1969. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Parish, Cub Scout den mother, volunteer nurse, cook, and seamstress for the Emerald Knights Drum and Bugle Corps. She worked the night shift at St. Luke's for years, retiring in 1996.
She will be remembered for many things; her love of Christmas, wicked sense of humor, love of her children and grandchildren, prolific ability to win mail-in sweepstakes (10K in gold, cruises, Safari, piles of t-shirts), sewing needlepoint prowess, drink coffee 24/7, love for casinos, and the game pai gow.
Survivors include her daughter, Colleen and husband Donald Powers of Solon; three sons, Michael of Cedar Rapids, Francis of Las Vegas, and Timothy of Marion; sister, Sharon Fall of Stanwood; four grandchildren, Megan Schulte and Ben Hysler of Cedar Rapids, Danny and wife Alysia Powers of West Branch, Kenneth and Jennifer Gorman both of Kurihama, Japan; and great grandchild, Indica Mulcher.
Sally was preceded in death by parents, husband, Chuck; brothers, Thomas and Forest Hagerty; brother-in-law, Leo Fall Jr; and niece, Harriet Thomas.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Hospice of Mercy.

To the Gorman Family, we would like to express our deepest sympathies and condolences during this time.
Thank you, Sally, for mentoring me as a young nurse on the night shift at Saint Luke’s! I so appreciated her wisdom, knowlege and her humor!
Thank you so much Michele. Mom loved mentoring all the young nurses.
I worked nights with Sally for 9 years in the 80s and early 90s. She had so much knowledge to share, and I enjoyed not only working with her, but also that “wicked sense of humor”. She was one of a kind!
Thank you so much Jo. Mom was a nurse and caretaker to her core.
Sally was my night nurse mentor at the beginning of my nursing career in 1968, She was an excellant teacher and nurse and friend. We shared a lot with working nights and a growing family at home. She taught me lots of skills and time managment as well as teamwork with the small night shirt staff support. I will never forget her focused care and consentration despite all the clamor of 56 patients to care for and one green new nurse to train . Her wisdom and knowledge coupled with her deep love for family life are a model for all to learn. She also could laugh and joke on many different levels . Her devoted love of family and care for others in and out of the hospital were iconic. Wish more today had her skills. Still recall her wit and laughter too. Kathie Oppedahl
Thank you so much Kathie . I remember you and moms friendship well. I also remember my first babysitting job lol
I worked with Sally the first year that I started at St. Lukes. Because of her experience and expertise, she was always our “go to” person whenever there was a crisis. Always calm, cool and collected we all knew we could count on her for anything. People always assumed the night shift was quiet, but I never worked so hard that first year and Sally was a great role model and team player and could make me laugh when no one else could. I’m so glad I got the opportunity to know her. It hurts to know that she is no longer with us, but it certainly was a life well lived. My condolences to her family.
P.S.: I still have her Lime Jello Supreme Recipe and have passed it down to my daughter.
