Sarah "Irene" Nost Brown, 95 of Mechanicsville and Lisbon, died Tuesday September 12, 2006 in Mercy Medical Center, Cedar Rapids, from complications of congestive heart failure. Funeral services for Irene will be 1:30 p.m., Saturday at the Morgan Funeral and Cremation Choices Mount Vernon Chapel, by the Reverend Tom Mattson. Friends may call from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m., Friday, at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Lisbon Cemetery. Irene is survived by a daughter Betty Lucille "Lucy" (Junior) Hinz of Anamosa, two sons Rolland "Dean" (Betty) of San Antonio, Texas and Lester "Gene" (Connie) of Mechanicsville. Irene is also survived by eleven grandchildren; sixteen great grand children with one on the way, and six great great-grandchildren. Preceding Irene in death were her parents; her husband; two sisters: Betty Katherine Nost and Helen Carol Greene; three brothers: Fred, Gerald, and Paul Nost; a great-grandson Tom Gibson and a nephew Dick Greene. Irene was born March 23, 1911 in Cedar Rapids, the daughter of George Thomas and Letta Elsie Harris Nost. Irene attended Standing Rock Country School at rural Mount Vernon and Mount Vernon High School. She married Cliff Brown August 17, 1929 at Lisbon. Cliff died June 25, 1988. The couple spent a year in Greenville, Tennessee before moving back to the Lisbon area. After retiring from many years on the farm, she helped her husband operate the Brown's Sutliff Store and Tavern at rural Lisbon. Irene was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary in which she held many offices. She was a member of the Lisbon United Methodist Church, where she was active in Bible Study. Irene enjoyed gardening, working with her flowers, visiting people, and lending a helping hand where needed. A memorial fund in Irene's honor has been established.
