Dateline Mount Vernon M. Roy Martin, 88 of Mount Vernon, died Monday, August 31, 2009 in Hallmark Care and Rehabilitation Center, Mount Vernon, from complications due to congestive heart failure. Funeral service, 10:30 a.m., Thursday, at Morgan Funeral and Cremation Choices, Mount Vernon Chapel, with Masonic rites. The family will greet friends, Thursday from 9:30 a.m. until service time at the chapel. Burial Mount Vernon Memorial Cemetery, with military rites. Roy is survived by his wife Pearl, a daughter Sue Votroubek, Tiffin, son Roger (Karen), Mount Vernon, nine grandchildren, twenty great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandson, three brothers, Oliver, Laughlin, Nevada, Leland and William, both of Cedar Rapids, and sister Joyce Blair, Cedar Rapids. Preceding Roy in death were his parents Willis and Carrie Kelly Martin, son Ron, daughter Sandi, and sister Elizabeth. Roy was born February 8, 1921 in Martinsburg, Iowa and graduated from Mount Vernon High School in 1939. He served with the U. S. Navy during World War II, and was a member of Hahn-Howard American Legion Post #480, where he served as past Post Commander. He married Pearl Whitlach. He retired after 40-years from Collins Radio, and was a 20-year member of the I.B.E.W., Union of Cedar Rapids, before moving to management. Roy owned and operated Marion Rare Coin & Supplies for three years and was a member of American Numismatis Association. He was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church, serving as Elder for many years. Roy was a 50-year member and served as past Worshipful Master, of the Mount Vernon Masonic Lodge #112. Memorials for Roy may be sent to the First Presbyterian Church, 221 1st St. E., or Mount Vernon High School Alumni Association, 525 Palisades Road, both Mount Vernon, Iowa 52314.
