Robert William Turecek, 90, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, passed away peacefully on April 13, 2021, at Hiawatha Care Center. Private family services will be held at Stewart Baxter Funeral & Memorial Services, with burial following at Oak Hill Cemetery. Friends and extended family are invited to watch the service via livestream. Please find the livestream link on Bob's tribute wall and share your support and memories with his family.
Bob was born on February 13, 1931, on the family farm near Cou Falls in Johnson County. He was the only child of William and Marie 'Mayme' (Teslik) Turecek. Bob's admirable work ethic began as a 14-year-old in 1945, working as a hired hand on the farm. He later worked for Kent Feeds, Swisher Farm and Lumber, Texaco, and Trax Oil. His primary career was as a machinist for Terex (formerly Cedarapids, Inc. and Iowa Manufacturing) for 38 years before retiring in 1993.
Bob was an expert storyteller, card player, and prankster with a memorable and hearty laugh. He was always happy and his love for family, friends, and community shined through every day!
When he wasn't mushroom hunting, you would find him fishing and giving back his time and talents. He was a driver for the Emerald Knights Drum & Bugle Corps; donated five gallons of blood to the Mercy Hospital Blood Bank, volunteered at Mercy Medical Center; supported his union, IAM Local 831, including receiving the Betty Pierce Labor Senior Award in 2004 from the Hawkeye Labor Council for 'long and outstanding efforts to advance the labor movement'. Bob also gave back to his country with six years of service to the National Guard. In his later years, Bob was active in the Fraternal Order of Eagles, the Golden 'Oldies', Senior Dinners and Lazarus Mass at Immaculate Conception, and he really enjoyed ringing bells with the Ding-a-lings at Garnett Place.
On October 11, 1952, Bob married the love of his life, Shiela McDermott at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Their family grew to include three daughters, Marlene Turecek, Lori Turecek, and Robin (David) Nelson; and four grandchildren, Katie, Benjamin, and Emily Nelson, and Sean Carver.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents and wife, Shiela.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Community Health Free Clinic, 947 14th Avenue SE, Cedar Rapids, Iowa 52401, or Tanager Place, 2309 C Street SW, Cedar Rapids, Iowa 52404, Attention Advancement Services or Venmo @Tanager-Place (#3432).
Bob touched many lives and made many friends along his life journey. His family extends appreciation to Garnett Place, Hiawatha Care Center, Mercy Medical Center, and Hospice of Mercy for their wonderful care and loving touch. It means the world.
Bob was a great neighbor. He spoiled Lee and Lauren with ice cream treats. Shared great stories. Help us chase our large yellow lab, Sten because he often jump our backyard fence. Bob will be missed 💜

I enjoyed our visits at Young @ Heart monthly get-togethers at All Saints Church. Parnell Ettledorf
Thanks for the memory, Parnell! Dad enjoyed church dinners and loved to visit!
I worked with Bob for many years with Bob, probably close to 30 or so. We had a lot of good times and some not so good, but we always walked away grinning. To us he was Bobby T. , full of fun. He was a strong union man also. He ran a big drill there and always had a smart remark when I walked by. I tried to support him when he lost his wife and he was there when I lost mine. He was a good man to have on your side. Rest In Peace friend.
Thanks for the great memories, Gary! We have fond memories of Dad’s buddies at Iowa Man.!
With thoughts of peace and remembrance,
Thank you for your beautiful gift and kind words.
With gratitude for Bob’s service to our community and hugs to the Nelsons and the rest of the family. Rob and Kate Hogg and Family
Thanks, Hogg Family!

Meadowbrook Drive will always have a special place in my heart and your dad in his overalls is a big part of those childhood memories. May those beautiful memories of your dad carry you through these times and bring you a source comfort. With sympathy, Dennis and Sheri (Jennings) Miller
Thanks, Sheri and family! Meadowbrook had the best families, and those who have passed will always be remembered fondly! I’m sure both our dads are having a good laugh and telling jokes to each other.

Bob brought so much joy and laughter to our community. He will be missed more than words can say. Our thoughts are with your family.
Dad loved his “friends” at Garnett Place. He especially enjoyed the Ding-a-lings and visiting with all of you!
Bob Turecek was a good man and a good union steward. He helped a lot of people. He will be greatly missed. Joe Ironside
Thank you for your kind words. The union was very important to Dad!
Sorry to be late to the game on this. Marlene, Lori, Robin, Katie, Benjamin, and Sean, you have our deepest sympathy in the loss of wonderful Bob, also known as “Oliver’s #1.” We will always cherish the tremendous gift of having Bob wait for us at the side entrance to Garnett Place during our pet therapy visits there. When we returned today for the first time in 14 months, Oliver sniffed around the chair where he normally greeted us. My heart broke just a bit in that moment. We loved Bob’s stories, his joy in overloading Oliver with treats, and simply everything about him. Just watched the recording of the service – what a beautiful job you all did reflecting his indomitable spirit. I could hear his laugh as I watched it. So grateful for the forever gift of Oliver’s #1, Bob! In friendship and with deepest sympathy, Oliver & Dawn
Dawn, we enjoyed your kind words in your sympathy card, and this tribute went right to our hearts! Dad looked forward to Oliver ‘s and your visit. I am sure Oliver missed Dad and the treats😉. Thank you for the happy memories!
We moved next door to Bob in 1997. Our first home with an almost one year old. Bob instantly made us feel welcomed. Our daughter adored Bob’s precious dog Bridgett. Her first word was dog and she loved to wave at both of them out the window. And he would always smile and wave back. Our family grew to four kids. Even so, he would remember all of their birthdays with a card and some cash. A highlight they looked forward to on their birthday. Then they would enjoy delivering him a slice of their birthday cake. Another tradition he shared with us was tickets to the annual ice cream social at his church. He was a special neighbor always ready to chat or help out.
Thanks for the fond memories and for being good neighbors to Dad.
I want to give my condolences To the family. I am sorry I didn’t get to talk with Bob before he passed away. Rest in peace Bob. Dennis Doc Holliday
He always looked forward to hearing from you. You were a good friend over the years. Take care, Robin and sisters
