Robert Gordon Horner, 87, of Mechanicsville passed away at his home after a short illness with his family at his side on Friday, August 22, 2014. Services for Bob will be 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, August 26, 2014 at the Mechanicsville First Presbyterian Church. The family will greet friends Monday, from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. at Morgan Funeral and Cremation Choices in Mount Vernon. Burial, Rose Hill Cemetery, Mechanicsville, with military honors. Bob graduated from the College of Mortuary Science in St. Louis in 1950, and owned and operated the mortuary and furniture store in Mechanicsville for many years. He was a member of the Iowa Funeral Directors Association. Bob worked for the Telephone Company for over fifty years. Survivors include: Arline, his wife of 64 years; son David and his wife Kathy of Waukee and son Terry of Mechanicsville; 2 grandchildren Ryan and Katelyn Horner of Waukee; a sister Jacqueline Covey and her husband Gene of Hot Springs, Arkansas; and nieces Michael Kay (Glen) of Hot Springs, Arkansas, and Dawn of Denver, Colorado. Bob was preceded in death by his parents Paul and Jenny and his daughter Linda (2005). Bob was born December 7, 1926 in Cedar Rapids and graduated from Mechanicsville High School. He wore many hats in Mechanicsville, a town he loved. He was Secretary/Treasurer of the Mechanicsville Business Mens Club for 17 years and a member of the Lions Club, Masons where he served as Worshipful Master, and Eastern Star where he was a Worthy Patron. In his spare time, he cheered for the Cubs, Bulls, Hawkeyes, and loved a good crossword puzzle. Bob was also very proud of his service as an Army veteran of WWII and the Korean War and his membership in the Busch-Dennis American Legion Post #309. Bob will be greatly missed by his family and many friends. Memorials in Bobs honor may be made to the Mechanicsville First Presbyterian Church and the Mechanicsville Fire and Ambulance Volunteers.
