Richard Paul "Dick" Hughes, 74, of Mount Vernon, formerly of Quasqueton, died Saturday, November 22, 2008, at Hallmark Care and Rehabilitation Center, Mount Vernon, from a long illness. Funeral Services are 11:00 a.m., Friday at Morgan Funeral Home, Mount Vernon, by Celebrant Mary Morgan. Viewing will be from 9:00 until service time Friday in the chapel. Burial Mount Vernon Memorial Cemetery, with military rites. Dick is survived by two brothers: Winn (Kathy), Cedar Rapids and Lloyd (Ruth), Lisbon, four nephews and two nieces, and numerous friends that called him "Uncle and Grandpa." Preceding Dick in death were his parents, and his four legged friends Princess and Sam. Richard was born December 22, 1933 in Mount Vernon, the son of Walter and Irene Stoneking Hughes. Richard received his diploma from Mount Vernon High School in 1953. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, serving in Japan, during the Korean War. Dick moved to Quasqueton in 1957, and retired from John Deere after thirty years. He belonged to the U.A.W. Union in Waterloo. Dick was a member and served as Assistant Fire Chief for the Quasqueton Volunteer Fire Department. He moved back to Mount Vernon in 2005 due to ill health. Richard never missed a Buchanan County High School football game in twenty-five years. He received an award for his attendance and working the sidelines with the 'chain gang.' He was a sports fanatic and especially enjoyed being in the infield at the stock car races at Hawkeye Downs. In his early years he enjoyed hunting and fishing.
