Norman Richard Staub, 89, of Cedar Rapids, died Tuesday, August 8, 2017, at home surrounded by his family. Funeral Service: 10 a.m. Friday, August 11, 2017, at Stewart Baxter Funeral & Memorial Services, Cedar Rapids. Visitation: 4-7 p.m. Thursday, August 10, 2017, at the funeral home. Burial: Mount Calvary Cemetery.
Survivors include his beautiful wife of 70 years, Betty; children, Kathy (Rick) Fry, John (Barb) Staub, Mike (Patti) Staub, Dorothy (Brent Walters) Staub, Rob (Kim) Staub, Patty (Doran) Wilson and Joe (Patti) Staub; 17 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.
Norm was born on April 2, 1928, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to Herbert and Dorothy (Arensberg) Staub.
He graduated from Immaculate Conception before going to work for his father who owned and operated H.K. Staub and Sons Construction. Norm met Betty Thompson at The Temple Roller Skating Rink in Cedar Rapids and they were married on July 12, 1947, at St. Matthew's Church, Cedar Rapids.
Norm took over the business and continued running it for 57 years before retiring in 2000. While still working at the construction company, he also built, owned and managed Lancer Lanes, Castle Lanes and May City Bowl.
The most important thing in Norm's life was his family. He was very proud of the fact that his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren followed him with a love of bowling. Watching his grandchildren's activities brought him the greatest joy.
He was preceded in death by his parents; grandson, Richie; great-granddaughter, Alexis; brothers, Herb, George, and Bill; and sister, Doris.
Memorials may be directed to the family.
To Norms entire family, my sincere condolences. Norm was a quiet soul, willing to help anyone, and never met a stranger. He made each person who entered Lancer Lanes feel like part of the family. May you cherish the many memories of his life journey. Rest in Peace Norm.
So sorry to hear of the loss of Norm he will be greatly missed
Norm was one of the best people I ever had the pleasure to work with, I will never forget the time I spent working Norm and Rob and the way he treated everyone he came in contact with. He will be greatly missed !!!
My sympathies to Betty and Norm’s family. I remember him well during my parent’s bowling days with Norm and Betty on the A&W bowling teams. He was always so nice…always a smile and a kind word for everyone.
I first met Norm and Betty in May 1978, which means I’ve know them both for nearly 40 years. They are true visionaries of bowling, and unbelievable contributors to the sport that the entire family loves. Norm will be missed terribly, but the legacy that he and Betty have left us all are his incredible family, and the fact that bowling in Cedar Rapids will continue strongly for years to come because of their passion and contributions for more than 50 years! Bless Norm and his family – many of whom I am so honored and proud to call my friends.

I really don’t know what to say. I have known your family for so many years, when us kids bowled in league at Jubilee Lanes. That had to be in the early 60’s. Norm was always the nicest person I ever met. Always a smile. George really liked him. They are together now. I am so very sorry for your loss. Take care of each other. You are all in my thoughts and prayers.

I graduated with Norm’s son John. After school and weekends we would end up at the house. I was always treated with kindness. I have such fond memories of walking from La-Salle to the Staub house. Norm and Betty really created a loving and caring environment for all of us. Class of 73 – Les Etscheidt
Norm was such a great guy, father, and neighbor. My children and Betty and Norm’s children were friends and classmates. Staub Construction even built our house on 1st Ave. I have so many fond memories of them as neighbors. and our kids going back and forth between houses. It seems like yesterday. It was because of Betty and Norm that our family became a family of bowlers. Sending deepest sympathy and hugs to the whole Staub family.
Please accept our deepest feeling of regret for Norm’s passing. We both remember how he could make us both smile.

I had the pleasure of working for Norm in the late 70’s. He was a great boss, but he was also a great man. God bless the Staub family.
Norm gave me my first construction job in 1975. I’m running my own business today in Tennessee. I always had great respect for his family. Great memories! Norm will always be remembered by many he influenced thru the years.

I am so very sorry for your loss. Please find comfort in God’s sure promise of a resurrection as set forth in the Bible. (Acts 24:15; John 5:28,29) Those who are raised to life will have the prospect of never again being subject to misery, sickness, or death. (Revelation 21:4) I hope that reflecting on these thoughts will give you some relief during this difficult time.
