Neil Barkalow

May 28, 1974 ~ January 24, 2021

Neil Barkalow, 46, of Mount Vernon, passed away after a long struggle with mental illness and depression on Sunday, January 24, 2021, at home. Gathering of Family and Friends: 4-6 p.m. Friday, January 29, 2021, at Stewart Baxter Funeral & Memorial Services, Mount Vernon. All attendees are required to wear facemasks and respect social distancing. Survivors include his wife, Renee; children, Zariell and her family, Ellie, and twins, Jack and Caroline; sincerest friend and karaoke partner, Aaron 'P' Peshek; Renee's family; and some extended family. Neil Derrick Barkalow was born May 28, 1974, in Iowa City. He grew up in North Liberty with his mom, Carol Lee (Ambrose) Barkalow, and seven siblings. Neil worked in restaurants, did landscaping, but most recently was a stay-at-home dad. Neil cherished his kids, lived for tucking them in each night, picking them up from school, creating a shared love for music in singing songs, seeing the excitement in Jack's Minecraft interest and Caroline's smile in seeing her dad, and Ellie's band talents and eclectic music tastes. Neil wished for his children to chase their dreams and find happiness in their lives. His love for them will not be forgotten; he will be missed by his family and friends. ''Some day when we meet up yonder, we'll stroll hand in hand again.' He was preceded in death by his mother. Memorials will be directed to an organization that helps those battling mental illness.

  1. My condolences to the Barkalow family on the loss of your Brother. You are in my thoughts. Rest in peace Neil. Marcia Aubrecht Gatto.

  2. Renee, I was not expecting to see the news of Neil’s passing this morning. My heart is aching for you, the kiddos, and family. Any other words will seem empty now even when said with love. Take care of yourself and know that you and your family are loved. Linda Miller
