Monk Sivertsen

February 5, 1951 ~ February 8, 2024

Monk, 73, of Marion, passed away Thursday, February 8, 2024, at St. Luke's UnityPoint Hospice. A Celebration of Life will take place at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 11, 2024 at The Moose Lodge 304/515, 1820 W Post Road SW, Cedar Rapids, IA 52404. Stewart Baxter Funeral & Memorial Services, Cedar Rapids is caring for the family. Du Wayne was born in Waterloo, Iowa, to Vernon and Viola Sivertsen. His childhood was spent in Traer, Iowa until his father died in 1959. After his mother remarried, he moved to Evansdale, and then to Maple Leaf, Iowa. Monk graduated with the class of 1969 from Crestwood High School in Cresco, Iowa. In 1970, he married Corinne 'Neenie' Thompson. They were married for 27 years. From this union, three children were born. Monk later married Deb Robinson; they later separated. Monk had a love for motorcycles. This started in his youth when his mother bought him a Cushman. It didn't take long for him to realize that he had a gift for working on on bikes of all kinds, especially Harleys. In the early 70's, he moved down to Cedar Rapids working a few jobs before starting Monk's Cycles in his garage in 1975. He moved his home, family and business to Shueyville in 1979. The shop there allowed him to work and to develop close friendships throughout the motor cycle community. He spent time with friends at Abate meetings, swap meets, hill climbs, and rallys. Monk was also a founder of the FTS Memorial Ride. Along with his business, Monk served Shueyville as Councilman from 1984 to 1991, then as Mayor from 1991 to 1997. In 1997, he closed Monk's Cycles for good and started working at College Community Schools as a maintenance man and bus driver. He was very fond of his 'bus kids' who referred to him as 'Mr. Monk.' He was a strong willed, independent man who was diligent in all his work. Monk was a man of high integrity. He never made excuses for his actions because he lived life his own way. He had a great heart even though he didn't wear it on his sleeve. Monk is survived by his children, Chris, Michelle, and Jessica; grandchildren, Talan, Dominick, Marlee, and Georgia; brothers Darrell (Kathy) and Kevin (Kim); coffee buddies; and many other friends and family. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister Darrellene; and niece Cindy. The family wishes to thank St. Luke's UnityPoint Hospice staff for their help in Monk's final days, and Iowa Donor Network. Memorials can be made to the family for donation. Cards can be sent to Stewart Baxter Funeral & Memorial Services, 1844 1st Avenue NE, Cedar Rapids, Iowa 52402. 5. Uncle DuWayne “Monk”we miss you already. If therer are motorcycles in heaven, I’m sure you found them. Good memories of you giving us kids rides on your motorcycle in Shueyville then my classmates & neighbors from Prairie would say, “who is that guy you were on back of the motorcycle with? That’s my coolest Uncle around. We thought as kids we were the coolest around riding in the back of his motorcycle. When your sister Darrellene- my mom would let us ride was a treat. RIP- Uncle DuWaynee. LOVE ❤️ Eva

    • I will always remember him lol, working on my first Harley, when he had the shop, “why should I fix this, your just going to beat the tar out of it and break something else” lol. We went on to later put on a bike ride to remember all our friends. He was a huge part of that for 20 years.

  6. Uncle Monk, you’ve left a lot of people with so many wonderful memories of you. I’m so glad you and Neen allowed me to live with you when I was 16 to graduation, and for servicing, my motorcycle whenever I needed it. I wish we had more breakfast together. Please say hi to Aunt Neen, my Mother, Grandma, and Grandpa. May you all rest in peace.
