Michael Coley Hyde

October 17, 1968 ~ May 15, 2011

Michael Coley Hyde, 42, of Marion, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Sunday, May 15, 2011, at Mercy Medical Center, Cedar Rapids. Private family services were held. Coley was born October 17, 1968, in Clinton, Iowa, the son of Lauren and Judy (Tallman) Hyde. He grew up in Clinton and graduated from Mater Dei High School in 1987 and then from Central College in Pella in 1991. Coley's passion for sports and life will never be forgotten. God blessed him with unmatched speed, strength and desire to win. He played football in high school and college and was feared by his opponents. At Central, he held the record for the most touchdowns in a half and as a senior moved to defensive back and was an All Conference performer. All will remember the special and inseparable bond between Coley and his brother and teammate, Erik. They will forever remain each other's heroes. Coley had a great love for his family and friends. His sons, Skylar and Hunter meant the world to him, as did his nieces and nephews. As a supervisor for Alside Windows, he had a passion for caring for his co-workers and employees. He will be greatly missed by everyone who knew and loved him. He is survived by his parents, Lauren and Judy; sons, Skylar and Hunter; sisters, Sherri (John) Allen, Deb (Earl) Krogman, and Angie (Juan) Torres; brothers, Terry Hyde and Erik (Amy) Hyde; and many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. Coley was preceded in death by his grandparents; and his beautiful niece, Kylee, who greeted him at the gates of heaven with a Fist Bump #5. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established.

  7. So there I am on a Friday night, just an eight grading sitting around the house with nothing to do. An eighth grader who looked up to and idolized his older brother Chris and best friend Coley. Now you would think, what popular senior would want to hang out with an eighth grader? It never ceases to amaze me every time I think about it when Chris and Coley were about to leave to the house on a Friday night, Coley turned to me and said “Hey Domi..you coming or what?” Coley always included me on things like this and as long as Coley was there for some reason my Mom would let me go!! Anyways long story short, it was during these times that I learn a lot about high school life well before my peers and I appreciated that a lot..Not to mention it always proved to me a great time!! Thank you Cole Train and thank you Chris!! You always had my back! Love you both.. R.I.P Michael Coley Hyde! Fist pump 5!!

  8. Coley was a fantastic influence on and off the football field at Central College. No matter what kind of mood I was in, Coley could always get me to smile. He will be missed.

  23. Our thoughts and prayers go out to all the Hyde’s. So many memories that you can always share when you are together to help you through this!

  24. I remeber years of playing baseball against Coley in Clinton and daily kickball games at St Marys. Coley and all his family will be in our prayers.

  25. I’ll always remember and cherish the comforting smile Coley always had no matter what the situation. One of the memories that stand out the most is when we would sit in the back of the drivers ed. car scared because our third driver had previously ran into a fire hydrant and a street sign. Coley would grab my hand and wink. We would hold on with our seat belts tight and wait. When we hit something again and we did often) we would quietly laugh and laugh until we cried. Well now my heart cries for the entire Hyde family and all the friends Coley has touched. This world will not be the same but Heaven will definitely be better with Coley smiling down at us.

  26. So many treasured memories gathered during the years at Central with Train,E, Voors, Shep, Ragarm, Snyder, Lauf, etc…Whenever my kids call me Dad it reminds me of how prescious those of you are that first gave me that name.

  33. You coming or what?
So there I am on a Friday night, just an eight grader sitting around the house with nothing to do. Thank you Cole Train and thank you Chris!! You always had my back! Love you both.. R.I.P Michael Coley Hyde! Fist pump 5!!

  34. Always included everyone
A Fall day in 1978, I was a scared 3rd grader who just moved to Clinton on 10th Avenue South. As I stood in my front yard (two houses away from the Hyde pad) in my Steelers jacket, I wondered if I would ever find any new friends in this new town. Coming from the alley and around the corner of the grey stucco house came Coley with his brother E, as I saw them I was really scared as C-train looked really intimidating back then, but to my suprise and with a huge smile Coley says ‘hey, come hang with us bud’…….as in every story of Coley he always included everyone and made you feel like a true friend…and during the next 10 years of school Coley was always like a big brother to me (watching out for me, keeping me in line when needed, and talking me through tough times with my Dad) he always treated me like one of the family. Even after losing touch for years after HS, when i saw him he treated me like we just saw each other the day before. I will always remember Micheal ‘Coley’ Hyde as a friend and brother. I love you Ctrain. REST IN PEACE!

  35. I was lucky to be part of the extended Hyde family growing up and I have such wonderful memories of Coley growing up. He always let me tag along and was so patient. It is such an honor to have him in some of my favorite childhood memories. God Bless Coley and all of the Hydes. You are in our prayers!!

  39. My heartfelt sympathy goes out to the Hyde family! Death leaves a heartache no one can heal, love leaves a memory no one can steal. Wishing you comfort and strength at this difficult time. Much love to you all.

  40. To my extended family The Hydes my thoughts and prayers are with you in this time of sadness. Coley was one of kind, just like the rest of your family. The big man on campus who fit in with everyone whether you were an athlete or a bookworm, he made you feel like you were apart of it. The wink, to let you know he was watching you even if you didn’t think you belonged, the gaint bear hug welcoming you back when you have been away for awhile, the Notre Dame trips, and the talks are all things I will miss about Coley, but they are memories that will keep me going knowing he is still watching over all of us. I am proud to say Coley touched my life. Rest in Peace my brother. Fist Pump #5.

  41. I am truly sorry for your loss. I know that God will take Coley into his arms and make him a great angel!! I have many fond memories or growing up with Coley!! It is funny what we remember from our childhood but something I always remember is jumping on the bed with Coley as small children whenever I came over to play. I also remember the time that Coley had to wear one of my dresses for a Cub Scout skit that he was doing in my moms Cub Scout troop. There are sooo many more memories!! Coley was a great man!! He will truly be missed!! Kathy Notz Wittenauer and family

  47. I am saddened by the news of Coley Hyde’s passing. Upon learning, instantly my mind went back to the days of High School Football in Eastern Iowa. We had some battles back in the day playing Coley’s ‘Mater Dei’ Football teams. Although we grew up just miles from each other and a day apart in birthdays – we had a rivalry born out of competition, I always had respect for the hard work and skills Coley possessed. I am not surprised he went on to many successes in life. My Family and Friends from all over this great nation send our condolences. His life was cut way too short but what an impact he has made and his family can be proud of that fact. RIP Coley Hyde. R/ Wade Baxter – Mesa Arizona. (via Camanche High School 1986)

  51. ColeTrain – So I’m having a tough time believing you are gone. Wish we would have talked more over the last few years, but I want you to know that you were never far from my heart. You are an absolute, one of a kind, legendary guy. I will miss you but cherish the memories.
Hyde family – You’ve taken on more grief than any family should – it’s not fair, but I believe God always has a plan – trust in him. You are truly special people.
Skylar and Hunter – We’ve never met – I roomed with your Father at CUI. He was the “real deal”. Everyone liked Coley. He was a great athlete, and even better leader. He could always make people smile and made time for everyone. You always felt special around Coley. Live strong in his memory!

    Love ya Train!

He had a knack for making EVERYONE feel special. I hope that all the warm thoughts from the people who were lucky enough to know Coley, bring the family some comfort. The Hyde family and friends are in my thoughts and prayers.

  60. I join everyone in offering my condolences for your loss. Coley’s personality–his energy, kindness, and smirking wink–was infectious. 68. Coley’s compassion for others
My Mom opened up the paper this morning and read Coley’s obit in the paper and realized she knew him. He spent a few days at their house in Coralville doing some work for them on their windows. They had a problem on the west side that had so many windows and Coley’s company had the best bid to install this film on all of those windows. He spent a handful of days at their house, with another young man, installing the stuff.

My Mom said he just stuck out in her mind because he was so kind, funny and so friendly. The young man he had working for him dropped an extension ladder in their great room and ended up smashing a frame of a picture and a light. Coley went and found my Mom and was so sweet to make sure she knew they would take care of everything. It was not a big deal to my Mom, she just had the things fixed that were broken. She said about two weeks later her phone rang and it was Coley …. just making sure that the items were able to be fixed and if she was OK with it or if she wanted them replaced. He just went out of his way she said….way above and beyond what he needed to.

She wanted me to tell you how sorry she was to see he passed away and that even though she just briefly met him….he always stuck out in her mind because how nice he was.

Thinking of you all …… Kris

  69. Just wanted to post your note to Kylee when you got her memorial tatoo: Coley’s note to Kylee when he got his memorial tatoo:
    My dearest Kylee,
Forever on my mind, forever in my heart, and now forever on my body. With this I can explain to people daily the love, joy, and happiness that you brought this world. Your work on earth will not cease.
In your honor with great love. Uncle Coley

  70. I was fortunate to go to school with Coley from 8-10th grade. Even at that young age Coley was a true gentleman. He was friendly, humble, kind and respectful. He had a knack for making EVERYONE feel truly special.

  71. I was fortunate to get to know Coley through my working relationship. He was one of the best as a supervisor. He was a compassionate and professional leader. My thougts and prayers are with the family.

  72. Dear Coley and All the Hyde Family, Jerry and I have very fond memories of all of you, from Sherri on down: from the brave girls who took on the task of babysitting our boys when we went somewhere(remember the cow tank incident?)to Terry needing help when injured on the 6th St. hill to Coley and Erik being palls and teammates together!
It is a whole “era” of memories that shall never be taken fom us. Thank you, Lauren and Judy for your wonderful family! Coley and
Erik helped shape our own sons’ characters!
Coley, you sweetheart! You always called me “Mom”(your other Mom) which was such an honor to me! You were always the gentleman; always lifted others up by your positive attitude and cheerful disposition! You were a “plus” for our boys. Thank you for that! We always enjoyed seeing you compete in sports. You had that “killer” instinct that all great athletes have. You have now “fought the good fight”! May you now receive your heavenly reward along with your beloved niece,Kylee.

On the day that I learned that you were sick, my computer stopped. I thought it had crashed. I finally unplugged it for a couple days. On Monday I plugged it back in and “Lo and behold: it worked” Wow that must be a sign that you are in heaven! Alleluia!
Thank you for being in our lives especially for being in our son, Chris’s life! You will be always in his fond memory! Love, Mom Denise.” Now a story from Jerry.
“I’ll always laugh about the time that the keg in the garage bar had an “accident”and the beer drained out all over the floor. We then called the back yard,”Miller Alley” and you and Chris ended up shellacing the walls in the garage to make up for the loss. It is a humorus memory.” Jerry
    We love you, Coley!

Although many years have passed, the memories created as children will always be considered special and held in the highest regards. Thank you, Coley and God Bless. Sincerely,
    Doug

  78. Little League
I am so sorry to hear of Coley’s passing. I only knew Coley and Erik for a couple years when they played Little League when I was the coach of the Clinton Southside Pirates. I moved from Iowa shortly after coaching the Pirates. I am not sure they will remember me, but I sure remember both of them. They both had a confidence in their manner and a twinkle in their eyes that most Little Leaguer’s do not have. Coley had a very strong arm and could play any position except maybe catcher and Erik took care of that. I still remember the 3rd game of the City Championship where Coley pitched 5 great innings allowing the Pirates to be City Champs. It is not surprising to me to hear they both had great athletic careers. Thinking of the Hyde boys still brings a smile to my face.

  79. Dear Coley, after so many years passed since we last spoke, we connected after Kylee’s passing. We had many in-depth conversation of the love you had for our angel Kylee. We had many talks that her passing really was a difficult time for you to get through because of the loss of a beautiful person and angel who had touched so many lives. Kylee was waiting at the gates of heaven with open arms to greet the uncle she so loved. You both are two beautiful angels to watch over the rest of the family and friends. You both will be forever in our hearts and always on our minds. You both have touched so many lives. R.I.P. Coley (Coaltrain) & R.I.P. Kylee Fistbump #5 I think we all know that your both in peace up there together….May God Bless, Skylar, Hunter and the entire Hyde Family and give them the strength to get through this time. My thoughts and prayers are with you all, God Bless.
