Rev. Marvin L. Ehnen, 85, of Cedar Rapids, passed away Thursday November 17, 2022, at Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids. Memorial Service: 3:00pm, Saturday, Jan. 7, 2023 at St Mark's Lutheran Church in Marion, Iowa. Visitation: 1:00-3:00pm at the church prior to the service.
Marvin Leon, the son of Roland and Viola 'Minnie' (Saathoff) Ehnen, was born May 22, 1937, at the family farmhouse outside of Wymore, NE. He graduated from Barnston High School in 1955, where he played football. He was a lifelong Nebraska Cornhusker fan, who also enjoyed following both the Iowa State Cyclones and the Iowa Hawkeyes. After high school, Marvin worked for two years saving for college before going to Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa. It was at Wartburg where he met the love of his life, Barbara Ann Clasen. They were united in marriage on July 24, 1960 at St. Johns Lutheran Church in Lakefield, WI. After graduating, Marvin continued his calling by completing a Master of Divinity from Wartburg Theological Seminary in Dubuque, Iowa, where they had their first child, Mark.
The Reverend Ehnen served the Lutheran Church as an Ordained Minister for 25 years. After Seminary, the young couple followed his calling to rural Nebraska, where their second child, Cathy, was born. Their next parish was in West Branch, Iowa, followed by a move to Cedar Rapids, Iowa in 1973. Marvin was a devoted and well-loved pastor to many throughout his 17 year tenure at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Cedar Rapids. For the next 15 years, Marvin served as Director of Pastoral Services at the Good Samaritan Society in Davenport, Iowa. After retiring, Marvin and Barbara moved back to Cedar Rapids to be close to family and longtime friends. Marvin and Barbara enjoyed going to auctions, where he often bought lawn mowers and snow blowers, which he repaired and sold. He loved restoring and driving two antique Model N Ford tractors, continuing his love for internal combustion engines. He went on many tractor rides with his friends in the Two Cylinder Club. As Barbara's health failed, Marvin diligently cared for her for many years until she passed in January of this year.
Marvin was a devoted and loving husband to Barbara for more than sixty years. He loved dogs and shared much of his life in the company of Man's Best Friend. He loved playing cards with family and friends, especially playing 'Pitch'. He was always up for a game of cribbage, and won more than he lost. He was an excellent role model to his children, and a much-loved 'Papa' to his grandchildren. He was blessed with many caring relatives, friends and neighbors.Marvin is survived by his children, Mark (Denise) Ehnen of Roseville, CA; Cathy Ehnen of Cedar Rapids; four grandchildren, Joseph Warkel, Scott Ehnen, Grace Ehnen and Sean Ehnen; sister, Carol Behrends of Lincoln, NE; three sisters-in-law, Judy LaPean of Wisconsin, Debbie Arps and Ginger Schneider, both of Florida; his beloved grand-dog, Shiloh; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Barbara; his sister Eleanor; and his brother-in-law Jerald.
Marvin was diagnosed with cancer a few months after his wife Barbara passed. Ultimately, it was a respiratory infection that took Marvin from us.

We are deeply sorry for your loss ~ Stewart Baxter Funeral & Memorial Services – Cedar Rapids
The people of Bethany Lutheran Church, West Branch share our condolences and pray for you in this time. We give thanks for Pastor Ehnen, who served our congregation and others throughout his life. May the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus!
So sorry to here of Pastor Ehnen passing, my son David was Confirmed while Pastor Ehnen served in our Church at Bethany in West Branch
Pastor Ehnen was our pastor at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Cedar Rapids, and was there with Pastor Hilker when I was confirmed. He taught our confirmation classes and was always kind and thoughtful and sincere in his faith. I thought he was a wonderful minister and I got to know him even a little better when he would come to our house to give my Mom communion. I remember one time when he came to our house he was deeply troubled over a family in our parish who had lost a child. My family had experience with loss and I remember he turned to my father and asked him for his advice on how to talk to the family, because he feared they were struggling with their faith. My Dad, who was never shy on giving advice or consult, looked down and shook his head, and with tears in his eyes he said, “There are no words for losing a child, it’s just not right.” Pastor Ehnen, and my Mom in her hospital bed there in our living room, and my Dad all shed tears together and I remember thinking then – I will never forget this moment. I am so sorry for your loss. He was a gentle soul and a kind man.
Thank you, Renee. What a precious memory, thank you for sharing it with us.
I spent time with Pastor Marv over the past 40+ years as a friend of his son Mark. Hope this tree will thrive as a memorial and legacy to him.
Mark and Cathy, my deepest sympathies on the passing of your father. I know my (great) Aunt and Uncle Bee and Bill Daughtery thought the world of your folks and spoke so highly of them both! May happy memories sustain you during this holiday season. Thoughts and prayers to you both.
Thank you Kory. My parents considered your aunt and uncle to be special people, as well as good neighbors.
We send our deepest sympathy. Your Dad, Grandad was an amazing man loved and admired by so many. We pray for your comfort and peace and send our love.
Cathy and Mark, We are so sorry to learn of your loss. I had the privilege of serving along side Marv at Good Samaritan and thoroughly enjoyed partnering with him in this special ministry. He was a good man and servant leader who was very caring and compassionate to our residents/ families and the staff we had the honor of serving. I also enjoyed our weekly cribbage games (I rarely won) over lunch and the car auctions we attended together. Attending Luther-Wartburg (I was a Luther grad) basketball games and the bantering (he usually had the upper hand…LOl) that went along with that rivalry are all good memories. He was a good friend and kind soul!!1

Thank you, Tim. I know he thoroughly enjoyed working with you and considered you a good friend.
Cathy,
I am so sorry to hear of the passing of you Dad. What a wonderful man he was. I have fond memories of visiting with him and your mom and his willingness to always help me out with repairing a lawn mower or just simply interested in what I was up to. He always had a story to share or project to show, always with kindness and sincerity. He was very proud of you and your son.
Kyle – Thank you for the kind words and sharing the memories you have of my folks. We miss them greatly.
Mark, Cathy and families,
You have my deepest sympathy in Marv’s death. I thoroughly enjoyed serving with him at the Good Samaritan Society in Davenport. I joined the staff there in 1991 as the Director of Resource Development and Marketing, but since I was an ordained pastor (U. Methodist), I very comfortably became his “assistant” in pastoral ministry, when I could be of help. He was a caring chaplain, and we had many great times together. I and the residents and staff appreciated his sense of humor. He always had a joke or funny story to share. He provided me a solid foundation to follow him as chaplain and director of spiritual ministries, after he retired. My wife and I enjoyed visiting him and Barb a few times in Cedar Rapids. They were gracious people, and we miss them both.
