She married James Jim L. Cook on March 7, 1952, in Vinton, Iowa. She then worked with Jim in the Cook Hardware store from the mid-1970s, until Jim retired in 1990. She and Jim traveled the country to attend American Legion conventions and to visit family and friends. She looked forward to beginning each day with her coffee group and treasured her Mechanicsville friends. Marie also enjoyed gardening in her many flower gardens, her bridge clubs, and eating at Dittoes Restaurant. She was an active member in many organizations including the United Presbyterian Women, the Red Hat Society, Garden Club, American Legion Auxiliary, and Cedar County Historical Society. In 2013, she donated the tin shop that had been located on the second floor of Cook Hardware to the Cedar County Historical Society. Memorials are suggested to the First Presbyterian Church of Mechanicsville, Mechanicsville Garden Club, or Mechanicsville American Legion Auxiliary Unit 309. The family extends a sincere thank you to Maries caregivers, Marilyn Judd, JoAnn Pearson, and Hospice of Mercy and to her many friends and family who offered support.
Simply Elegant Spathiphyllum was purchased for the family of Marie Cook.
You have my deep sympathy. She was such a wonderful person. I remember her helping Mom when we were little and later I loved to “help” her in the beauty shop taking the papers off the perm rollers. We spent lots of time together when Jim, Bill, and Ray were at Legion meetings. May God look after both of you and all of us.
Words cannot express our sadness at the news of your loss. Your mom was always there with a smile and was such a loving, caring person. I have lots of great memories of our mom’s co-leading us through bluebirds and campfire, as well as all the sports activities our parents attended through school, as well as all the years our families have been good friends. Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this difficult time. With deepest sympathy. Chris & Randy Cairns Millie & Dick Zenishek
Best. Aunt. Ever. Always kind and gracious. Never cruel or insulting. Always smiling and so happy to see you. Loved Marie with all my heart. Peace to you, Colette, as you deal with her loss.

I have such fond memories of Marie from my childhood days..going to her beauty shop on main street in McVille, with my mom, to get our hair done. I remember the permanent rods that hung from the ceiling and how scary that was for me when I got my perms. This past summer I wrote Marie and shared with her those memories. I got the nicest letter from her. So glad I did this. Colette, you had a lovely mother. She was a kind and caring woman, always had a smile. The love of God, family and friends will sustain you as you go through the grieving process. I know that you will miss her. Warmly, Carlotta Haesemeyer Williams
Marie was always very caring and kind to all her customers in the hardware store. I stopped in the hardware when I was a young bride and visited with her. She made me feel very welcome to the Mechanicsville community in the early 1980s. Malinda Poduska
Sherian Collins and Vic Rahn purchased the Divine Peace Bouquet for the family of Marie Cook.
We loved visiting with Marie whenever we were in Mechanicsville and have fond memories of the ornaments she handmade every Christmas for David and Shannon. Marie always included us as part of her extended family (photos on the fridge) and she will be missed by all of us. Kent, Evie, David and Shannon Woods
Colette, Wishing peace to you and the rest of the family at this difficult time. Clark & Sharon Crisman
I always enjoyed talking with her at the store when I was in the state senate. My sympathies to all the family on your loss.
Colette, I’m sorry for your loss. It’s hard loosing someone so close to you even when you know they are in a better place. Peace to you at this difficult time.
Sorry for your loss, Colette. May she rest in peace with your Dad and your Grandpa and Grandma Crock, also the rest of the family whose gone before her. I’ll put you in my prayers! Mary Kathryn Moravek
Colette, so sorry to hear about your mom. She was a great person. Our sympathies go out to you.
I couldn’t agree with the comments of my cousin (Nan Seelman) more. Both Aunt Marie and Aunt Lucille, were always thoughtful and welcoming. I have fond memories as a kid of summer vacations to Mechanicsville, visiting the hardware store, and riding the tandem bikes around town. Marie will be missed and always remembered.
Thank you for sharing your memories of mother Carlotta. She had mentioned to me that you had written to her.
You guys took such good care of mother and her car. I always felt confident that her car was safe.
Thanks Nan. Love you.
