Lillian Marie Kaplan

December 6, 1924 ~ June 30, 2011

Lillian Marie Laing Kaplan, went home to be with the Lord on June 30, 2011 at the age of 86. Lillian was born on December 6, 1924 on a farm near Tipton, Iowa, the daughter of Andrew and Grace Baumgartner Laing. She graduated from Lisbon High School and shortly thereafter completed her teaching certificate. Lillian taught in country schools at the Solon Academy, Ivanhoe, and West Branch until marrying William "Bill" Kaplan on July 19, 1943 at the Wolfe farm south of Ivanhoe. They lived on the Kaplan family farm west of Mount Vernon for 65 years and raised 3 sons: Clifford (Terry), Cedar Rapids, Don (Cathy), Ely and David, Center Point. They gave her 10 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, and lots of love. Lillian is also survived by a sister Jean Riley. Preceding Lillian in death were her parents, husband Bill, brother Darrel Laing, and one grandson Todd Kaplan. Bill and Lill joined the Presbyterian Church in their early years where Lillian taught Sunday School classes. Bill and Lill were devoted parents and grandparents who attended all the special sports, church, and band events of their family. Lillian enjoyed preparing kolaches, pies, home made noodles, mashed potatoes, salads, vegetables, turkey, and all the trimmings for her family. The family would like to thank the staff at Hallmark Care Center, Mount Vernon for their excellent care of Lillian during her extended illness. Lillian's funeral service will be Saturday, 10:30 a.m., at the First Presbyterian Church, Mount Vernon. The visitation will be Friday, 4:00-6:00 p.m., at Morgan Funeral Choices, Mount Vernon.   4. So sorry to hear about the loss of Lillian. She was such a great person to be around at the Hallmark Care Center. I was there for my CNA training and she was someone who I enjoyed helping take care of. May she rest in peace. I send my thoughts and prayers to the family.
