Joyce Susan Reilly, 82, of Cedar Rapids, died at home on April 1, 2018. Memorial Service: 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 7, 2018, at Stewart Baxter Funeral & Memorial Services, Cedar Rapids. Visitation: 10-11:30 a.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.
Joyce was born on September 5, 1935, to George and Ruth (Kurtz) Adams in Cleveland, Ohio. On April 7, 1956, she married the love of her life, Thomas Francis Reilly, Jr., at Saint of Joan Arc Catholic Church in Chagrin Falls, Ohio. Her family, gardening, and extra-ordinary care for her home delighted Joyce. Several of her homes were featured in the Gazette's Home Section over the years. She also loved her pets and listening to Elton John, Abba, and the Bee Gees.
For over 20 years, Joyce worked in various positions for the Cedar Rapids Community School District. She was instrumental in developing the first computer labs, and served fifteen years as secretary to High Schools principals.
Those surviving Joyce include her husband of nearly 62 years, Tom; children, Ted (Karen) Reilly, and Melissa (Sam Schumacher) Reilly; grandson, Travis; and brother, James (Kathleen) Adams.
Joyce was preceded in death by her parents, and son, Christopher Michael Reilly.
I didn’t get to know Joyce long enough, but I had the privilege to meet her before she retire from Wash, she was always with a big smile every time you walked into the office.
I am very sorry to hear of Joyce’s passing. She was a special lady and I am glad I had the opportunity to meet her and work with her for several years at Washington. The world lost a kind heart on April 1. Prayers to Joyce’s family.
I so enjoyed Joyce during her years at Washington. She was always smiling, bright, and so cheerful—a great ambassador to welcome students, parents, and faculty to Wash. Before we had phones in our rooms, she was always so happy to leave me a sweet note from my husband when he called. Prayers and condolences to all Joyce’s family.
I was so sad to read that Joyce passed away. She was one of the most kind and genuine people I have known. She offered wise counsel when I needed it. When Joyce moved to Washington my daughter stopped in daily and got her Joyce hug. I know it helped her through her day. I hope Joyce is getting her clubs out for a round of golf or walking one of her beloved dogs that went on ahead of her. My thoughts are with you Tom, Melissa and Ted. Till we meet again my friend.
I just learned of Joyce’s passing. I worked with Joyce at Metro High School and totally enjoyed her calm peaceful manner. She was such an asset to the staff and students. Lots of laughs. Peace and Love
