John E. Poula, 84, of Mount Vernon, died September 30, 2019, at Hallmark Care Center. Memorial Service: 2:30 p.m. Friday, October 11, 2019, at the United Methodist Church of Mount Vernon with visitation one hour prior. Burial at Mount Vernon Memorial Cemetery at a later date. Arrangements are with Stewart Baxter Funeral & Memorial Services, Mount Vernon.
Surviving are his wife, Betty; children, Charles 'RJ' (Mary) Murphy, Dennis Murphy, Jody (Rainey Brown) Stewart, and Cheryl (Devon Barrett) Studt; 14 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; sister, Kathryn Birky; many nieces, nephews, and friends.
John Edward was born October 25, 1934, in Cedar Rapids, the son of Edward and Leona (Tomash) Poula. After graduation from Shueyville High School with the class of 1953, he served his country in the United States Airforce. John worked on the family farm until 1994. John married Betty Lou (Sandbach) Murphy on September 17, 1985, and got a family ready made for loving.
He worked for many different firms as a security guard. In his free time, John was an active member of the American Legion Post 480, and a life member of the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge 304. He and Betty were also members of the United Methodist Church of Mount Vernon.
He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Kim Alan Murphy; grandchild, Richard Andrew Studt; and brother, David Poula.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Hahn Howard American Legion Post 480.
