I remember the day he invited our whole class to visit his college classroom, probably in Jr. High. I thought he would be boring because he would talk over our heads, (what 7th grader is interested in Geology??) but he explained how the Native Americans made an arrow out of a round rock. I still remember that day to this day, even though I am experiencing MANY senior moments. Blessings and Prayers to all the family, Roberta Vaglica (Woods)
Herb– my deepest sympathies to you at the loss of your father. I remember him and your mother from the “days.” Again, a pleasure to see you again at reunion. Hope to see you again.
Family of Herb, In 1991 we were fortunate enough to move into the house directly behind Herb and Luretta (corner of 7th St & 7th Ave N). Herb and Luretta were wonderful neighbors to us. We consulted Herb on many issues-from how to care for trees and other plant material to how to build a playhouse for the boys. We still have his handmade seed trays. I also had the pleasure of working with him on landscape issues at Meth-Wick after he and Luretta moved there. We have many fond memories of Herb and want you to know what wonderful neighbors he and Luretta were. Sincerely,Arlen & Cheryl Russell
What a fine man we had the pleasure of knowing and calling a friend and patriot! Herb was so good to everyone and my personal contact as a chaplaincy friend gave me as much joy as he seemed to receive I was so sorry to not have been well enough the last couple of weeks to visit. Our prayers are with you. Ellis and Mary Carol Lambertsen
We were very sorry to hear of Herb’s passing. He and Luretta were a wonderful pair.We live just down the street(east on 7th St.) from their former home.We always admired their beautiful lawn and flowers. Our older daughter Alexis and Gusti Kollman’s granddaughter Sarah used to play with Dana when she visited Mt. Vernon. Herb and Luretta were always so good to them and seemed to enjoy their antics.Unfortunately we have 2 previous commitments tomorrow (3-16-14)so will not be able to attend the memorial service for Herb.I particularly wish I could visit with Dana. Alexis had just asked me about 2 weeks ago if I could find out where Dana is now, as she and Sarah K. were hoping to reconnect with her.Wish I had called Herb right then.. You are all in our thoughts and prayers during this time of sadness. Herb was a great guy, and he will be missed! With deepest sympathy, Don & Judy Stine
My condolences to the Hendriks family, and the loss of such a great Man. I had such great times as a kid, in the basement of the MV home, playing pool and ping-pong with grand-daughter Dana, and neighbor Gusti Kollman’s grand-daughter, Sarah. Herb and Luretta were such great people and such active members in the community. A sad day, and a reminder of how quickly Life passes by. Please, let Dana know I would love to reconnect. Peace to you all. Your Friend, Alexis Gallegos (Stine)
