Harold Gordon Kent

Harold Gordon Kent 87 of Lisbon, died Monday, March 16, 2009 in his Lisbon home following a long illness. The funeral service will be 10:30 a.m., Thursday at the Lisbon United Methodist Church, by Reverend Tom Mattson. Friends may call from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m., Wednesday at Morgan Funeral and Cremation Choices, Mount Vernon Chapel. Burial in Lisbon Cemetery, with military rites. Surviving Harold are a sister and brother-in-law Helen and Cecil Thompson of Portland, Oregon, sister Ruthann Kent of Manteca, California, and a sister-in-law Martha Ann Heald of Lisbon, many many nephews and nieces and great and great-great nephews and nieces, a special niece Judith (Judy) Askew and special family friend Pat Sterner both of Mount Vernon. Preceding Harold in death were his wife Ethel Mae in 2008, infant daughter and infant son, his parents, and a sister Dorothy and her husband Floyd Browning. Harold was born May 26, 1921 in Colony, Kansas, the son of John Herbert Kent and Nelle Alice Scott Kent. He was a graduate of Emporia, Kansas High School and attended the College of Emporia for two years. He worked for the Santa Fe Railroad in the engineering department, for two years following school and before entering the service. Harold was a veteran of the United States Navy during World War II, having served in the Pacific Theatre. He was discharged April 13, 1946 and was married to Ethel Mae Bigger Kent on June 2, 1946, at the Lisbon United Methodist Church. Harold had a varied working career following his Navy discharge and marriage. He worked as a clerk and meat cutter in several food stores, worked in building construction as a laborer. Harold retired from the United States Postal Service in 1981 after a total of 25-years, with nine years as a Distribution Clerk and the last 16-years as the Maintenance Control Clerk in the Cedar Rapids Post Office. Harold was a great sports fan and enjoyed them all. His favorites were football and track and field and were the ones he participated in. He did play some intramural basketball in high school and often described it as playing football on a basketball court. Harold enjoyed playing golf with his four-some, and particularly the Pinochle card after in the clubhouse. Memorials in Harold's honor may be made to the Lisbon United Methodist Church, 200 East Market Street or the Lisbon Public Library, 101 East Main Street, Lisbon, Iowa 52253.
