Gregory Hughes, 55, of Cedar Rapids, passed away Monday, July 29, 2019. Private Family Burial: Mount Vernon Memorial Cemetery. Stewart Baxter Funeral & Memorial Services, Mount Vernon, is caring for Greg and his family.
Survivors include his sister, Barbara Hughes; sister-in-law, Kathy Hughes; several extended family members; and many friends.
Gregory Follett Hughes was born February 14, 1964, in Cedar Rapids, to Noel and Maryann (Follett) Hughes. He graduated from Mount Vernon High School in 1982. With the support of Crest Services, Greg kept busy, socialized, and worked retail and customer service jobs for Goodwill and other local businesses. Greg loved animals, especially horses and dogs, building and collecting model airplanes, and visiting his brother in Arizona.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Jeffrey.

Barbara, I have such fond memories of your mom, dad and Greg when we lived across the street from them in Mt Vernon. Your mom and dad were definitely a Grandma and Grandpa to both Bob and I. Greg was always so respectful and fun to be around when he visited “home.” One thing I will never forget is how courageous your mom was when she was facing her illness. We enjoyed many a margarita with your parents! I continue to put flowers on your mom and dad’s grave at Memorial Day time and I will now add Greg! I know how much she appreciated it. She told me she thought of you as a daughter, and I believe that and was very happy she had you just across the street since I was so far away.
