Gerald Thies

Dateline Springville Gerald E. Thies, age 74 of Springville died at home from a fall on Sunday, May 29, 2005. His body has been cremated and memorial services will be held at the Springville United Methodist Church on Saturday, June 4th at 10:30 a.m., The Rev. John Keizer officiate. There will be an open visitation with the family on the Friday evening before from 5:30 until 8:00 p.m., at Morgan's Funeral Home in Mount Vernon. Gerald was born on July 14, 1930 in Sac City, Iowa. He was the son of William and Bertha Thies. He was a graduate of Boone High School in 1948. He married Jennilee Crooks on December 29, 1948. He was employed for 28 years as a representative of the John Hancock Company and 10 years with Cornell College in Mount Vernon. He served with the Iowa National Guards for many years. In total, he completed 38 years and retired with honors at the rank of Captain from the HHD 248th Aviation Battalion, Iowa Army National Guard. He is survived by his wife Jennilee, son David/wife Rheanne, son Dennis/wife Mary, and daughter Debra/husband John Wall. He took great pride in his grandchildren; Tammy Thies, Joshua Wall, wife Megan, Haley Thies, Adam Wall and Sarah Thies. In addition to his wife and children he is survived by his sister Minnie, husband Robert Alfveby, as well as, three special nieces, Barbara Cooper and Michele Stone and Devon O'Tool. He also enjoyed numerous other nieces and nephews. Special note should be made of his loyal companion, Boomer. He is preceded in death by his parents, and three brothers Ivan, Ray, and Duanne. Gerald was an avid hunter and fisherman in his early years. Later in life he was a consistent supporter of the Springville United Methodist Church, Men's Group, Promise Keepers, Meals on Wheels, Springville Lions Club and the C&D Social Club.
