Frederick Leon Smith(December 17, 1934 - December 14, 2023)
Frederick (Fred/Leon) was born on December 17, 1934, in Bowling Green, Missouri, to Robert and Rena Smith.
Preceded in death by his loving parents, wife, LaVista Smith; son, Price Jackson; siblings, Sarah Hobbs, Bill Smith, Jewell Smith, Betty Clark, and Milford Smith.
Fred (Leon) moved to Cedar Rapids in his teen years. He enlisted in the United States Army for four years and fought in the Korean War. He returned to Iowa in the late fifties, and he was employed by Wilson's Packing Plant (Farmstead) as a butcher for over twenty-five years, the United States Post Office on the dock for five years, and Jane Boyd Community Center as a custodian and scorekeeper for sporting events for four years.
In his spare time in the eighties, he was the night DJ at KOJC radio in Cedar Rapids as he was a great lover of music. He also loved cars, writing, and cooking. Fred, his brothers, and cousins were among the first Black American USA Bowling League cardholders in the state of Iowa. He should have been a bartender because he also made very creative cocktails.
Our father was the most loving, tender-hearted caring man. He was bigger than life itself in both stature as well as in heart. We are forever brokenhearted over this unexpected loss but are managing to push on as he would want us to.
He is survived by his daughters, Suzette L. Gadegbeku and Kortnee Stewart both of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; five grandchildren, Stefan Gadegbeku of Sterling, Virginia, Brie Wolfe of Manassas, Virginia, Malcolm Jackson of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, DeChone Jackson of Monticello, Iowa, and Rachelle Jackson of Monticello, Iowa; and one great-granddaughter, Rosemarie Riggins of Manasas, Virginia.
Not only leaving us to carry on his legacy but also a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends.
A private military honors burial will be in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
As in his style, by his request, a big party celebrating his life will be set in the Spring of 2024.
We are deeply sorry for your loss ~ Stewart Baxter Funeral & Memorial Services – Cedar Rapids
“let’s add a little atmosphere” 🖤
To the family..
Our hearts are broken but we are so proud to say Leon was in our lives.. He was a man of stature, the Dad of my niece and a “brother in law” to me. He will be remembered lovingly by our daughters and granddaughters. He attended all of our family celebrations .. birthdays, Christmases, graduations.. family picnics.. he was there. He was so thoughtful in writing things in cards making each one so special. When our Mom was alive, every year, he gave her Mothers Day flowers or a corsage to wear to church.. Leon will be greatly missed..an empty place in our hearts, but we have so many fun and meaningful memories that will go on forever… Prayers and Strength to all ..

I will always remember the fun we had together when I came home miss you Cuz
Leon has been a part of my life for 57 years. The stories I could tell would fill many volumes, including our matching Corvettes, vacations to Canada, Oregon, athletic events to see the Bears and the Twins not to mention our beautiful daughter, Kortnee and so much more. I’m going to miss him.
This is your Cuz Butch #Floyd I sent some Flowers to the Funeral home about everything we did when I came home and just seen they didn’t have my name on them my it came from me and should have arrived on the 18th that was me tell the family please ( Butch) Lloyd/Floyd Harrelson
I will never forget the very first time I was at Fred’s house for a visit. He fixed me the strongest Jack and coke that I had ever had.. I knew at that point were going to get along fine. Never knew that we would end up bonding over life and music.
