Edward B. Maher, Jr.

Edward Bernard Maher, Jr., 70, of Cedar Rapids died at home on Thursday, May 8, 2014. Family and friends will gather on Monday, May 12, 2014 from 4-6 p.m. with a memorial service beginning at 6 p.m. at Stewart Baxter Funeral & Memorial Services, Cedar Rapids. Deacon Jim Burger will officiate. Survivors include his wife, Cynthia; children, Rachel (Doug) Hale of Phoenix, Arizona, Edward B. (Debbie) Maher III of Cedar Rapids, Colleen (Roger) Cassill of Cedar Rapids, Mary Brandon of Gilroy, California, and Kathy Pyne of Cedar Rapids; brothers, John of Phoenix, Arizona, Pat of Alton, Missouri, Tim of Tempe, Arizona, Jerry of Phoenix, Arizona, Wally of Cedar Rapids, and Frank of Cincinnati, Ohio; sister, Gertrude Maher of Casa Grande, Arizona; 13 grandchildren; and five great grandchildren. Ed was born March 10, 1944, in Martinez, California, the son of Edward B. and Marquita (Henry) Maher, Sr. On October 13, 1963, he married Cynthia Van Slyke in Marion, Iowa. Ed worked as an iron worker for Iowa Steel before becoming an executive chef for over 20 years. He enjoyed playing cards, traveling, bicycling, and was a fan of NASCAR and the Pittsburgh Steelers. Ed liked to learn about history from television and movies, and enjoyed reading the Bible. He dearly loved his wife, Cindy of 50 years, his children, and his grandchildren, and they will greatly miss him. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Colleen Bridget Maher. Memorials may be directed to the family.

  5. I will miss my brother Ed. He always had some wonderful and colorful stories. Wally and I used to sleep over on Friday nights occasionally at Ed and Cindy’s house when we were very young in grade school because my dad was working nights. We had so much fun watching movies and talking.
