Dwain Higginbotham

Odis "Dwain" Higginbotham, 82, of Cedar Rapids, IA, died Wednesday, June 28, 2017, at Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy. Funeral Services: 3:00 p.m., Saturday, July 1, 2017, at Maranatha Bible Church Commons. Survivors include his spouse, Vonnie Higginbotham; son, Terry (Lucy Newson) Higginbotham, and three granddaughters with three great-grandsons; deceased son Gary's two daughters with seven great-grandchildren; son, Robert "Bobby" (Beverly) Higginbotham, and one granddaughter with one great-grandchild on the way; son, Alan (Gina) Higginbotham, and three granddaughters with five great-grandchildren; step-son, Chris (Melody) Trent, and six grandchildren with eleven great-grandchildren and two great-grandchildren on the way; step-daughter, Jeri (Dave) Garrett, and two granddaughters with four great-grandchildren; step-daughter, Tracy (Jim) Pfannenstiel, and two grandsons with six great-grandchildren; step-daughter, DeeDee (Chris) Scaffidi, and six grandchildren; step-daughter, Beth (Aaron) Telecky, and six grandchildren; siblings, Merita (Eric Wruk) Rodden, Neil (Pat) Higginbotham, and Melvin (Debbie) Higginbotham; and many nieces and nephews. Dwain was born April 19, 1935 in Kilgore, Texas, to Othor and Roberta (Raines) Higginbotham. He was blessed with an incredible intellect and memory. At the age of 19, he hitchhiked across the country, California to North Carolina, to begin his service in the United States Air Force. Along the way, Dwain walked through Mobile, Alabama during the Civil Rights riots, so he could see for himself what was happening. A man of many interests, Dwain worked as an accountant, tax preparer, and for the Colorado Springs School District. Later, while working at the Moose Lodge, he took a shine to Vonnie, making her his wife in 1990. In his free time, Dwain was an extremely competitive card player as well as an avid golfer. Dwain was preceded in death by his parents, Othor and Roberta; son, Gary; granddaughters, Diana and Gemini; grandson, Michael; and great-grandson, Bobby.
