Duane Hohmann

October 26, 1948 ~ March 26, 2026

Duane “Dewey” Hohmann, 77, of Lisbon, Iowa, passed away on Thursday, March 26, 2026, at his home surrounded by family. Visitation will be held from 2-7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 31, 2026, at Stewart Baxter Funeral & Memorial Services, Mount Vernon. A Vigil Service will be at 5:30 p.m. followed by a Time of Sharing Stories and Memories. Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, April 1, 2026, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. Luncheon will immediately follow and then burial at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Dubuque, Iowa.

Duane was born October 26, 1948, in Dubuque, son to Robert and Ina Mae (Ehrlich) Hohmann. Duane graduated from Wahlert High School in 1966 and was united in marriage to Judy A. Grutz on June 5, 1971. They celebrated 54 years happily married and were each other’s love of their lives. Duane worked for Beecher Quarries, Operating Engineers Local #234, General Drivers Local #421, and retired from Bowker Mechanical Contractors as a heavy machine operator.

Duane was a constant presence in his local community. For many years, he served as an officer for his Condo Association, where he meticulously oversaw maintenance and pond upkeep. While he took his responsibilities seriously, he was perhaps best known for the joy he took in “patrolling” the grounds and chasing the geese off the pond. He was also a familiar face in a men’s coffee group, where he shared stories and camaraderie, and was a member of the Cabin Coffee Book Club.

A man of quiet strength and conviction, Duane was an active parishioner at St. John the Baptist Church. He dedicated his time as a volunteer and found great brotherhood and spiritual growth as a member of the That Man Is You (TMIY) men’s group.

He enjoyed fishing, collecting antiques and saving everything for another day to be used, doing puzzles, watching the history channel, and woodworking, he was a jack of all trades, master of most, and also enjoyed grilling. He was known to family and friends as “Mr. Houdini”.

Duane is survived by his wife, Judy Hohmann; children, Deanna Hohmann, Tricia (Jason) Dausener, and Brenda (Christian “Chino”) Cardenas; grandchildren, Shelby (Dylan) Montgomery, Robyn Dausener, Benji and Creek Vogt, and Jenna Woodward; three step grandchildren; one great grandchild on the way; siblings, Roger Hohmann, Eugene (Teri) Hohmann, Patricia (Ray) Thul, Catherine (Wayne) Sanden, Joseph (Becky) Hohmann, and Daniel (Diane) Hohmann; brother-in-law, Jerome Gaul; and mother-in-law, Eileen Grutz.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Joshua Hohmann; sister, Elizabeth Gaul; and father-in-law, Anthony Grutz.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Mount Vernon/Lisbon Ambulance, Mount Vernon Fire Department, or the Lisbon Fire Department.

Due to allergies, if flowers are ordered, please green plants only.

The family extends a special thank you to Unity Point Hospice, UIHC, the teams of Dr. Smith and Dr. Zeitler, and to Dyane for her loving care.

  3. Judy and family, I’m so very sorry for your loss. The kids probably don’t remember me because I joined the Navy when they were young, but I remember your visits with my mom on Adair St. Thanks for watching out for her and being a friend. May you all find peace and comfort knowing that Duane has found his way to heaven and looks down upon you now. Judy, my sincere condolences.

  4. Dear Judy,
Our deepest sympathies to you and your family. We are so blessed to have known Duane. Thank you for sharing him with us! Since we are spending time in Florida, we will not be able to help with the funeral. Please know we are praying for you.
