Dorothy was born September 22, 1918, on a farm in Clinton Township west of Cedar Rapids, Iowa to Harrison Gordon 'Hal' Donnan and Mary (Esery) Donnan. Dorothy passed away peacefully January 15, 2015. She was the youngest of eight siblings.
She graduated from Grant High School in 1936. She attended Coe College and St. Luke's Nursing School simultaneously, graduating with her nursing degree in 1941.
Dorothy then moved to New York City to attend the Orthopedic Hospital advanced studies for operating room nurses. While there she met H.E. 'Gene' Herrington at a U.S.O. dance.
In 1943, she entered the Army Air Nurses Corp. and served until 1945. In September 1945, she married Harold Eugene Herrington in her Aunt Helen Hope's living room in Long Beach, CA. After Gene left the Navy in 1947, they returned to Cedar Rapids and opened the first Dairy Queen in Cedar Rapids. The store is now owned and operated by her granddaughter.
In 1974, Dorothy returned to the University of Iowa for a refresher course in nursing. She then returned to work at St. Luke's Hospital until her retirement in 1985.
She was a member of Kenwood Park Presbyterian Church where she served many years as a Deacon. She later belonged to Echo Hill Presbyterian Church. She was active in Charter Chapter of the American Business Women's Association.
Mrs. Herrington is survived by her four children, Nancy (Paul) Klein, Sally (Stephen) Stendel, Clancy (Jan) Herrington, all of Cedar Rapids, and Molly Herrington of Guangzhou, China. She is also survived by four grandchildren, Jill (Trent) Muckler of Marion, Iowa, Laural (Erik) Miller-Klein of Seattle, Washington, Marc (Emily) Klein of Houston, Texas, and Spencer (EmilyAnn) Walrath of Arlington, Virginia. In addition, she has five great-grandchildren who fondly named her GG. They are Devin and Caryss Muckler, Alexa and Camden Miller-Klein, and Audrey Klein. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews who all called her Aunt Do.
Dorothy was predeceased by her husband, her parents, all seven of her siblings and their spouses; several of her nieces and nephews; and her grandson, Sam Eugene Herrington.
Dorothy donated her body to the University of Iowa Medical School for research. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, January 31, 2015, at Echo Hill Presbyterian Church, 9000 C Avenue, Marion, Iowa.
The family would like to thank the staff and residents at Village Ridge where Dorothy made her home for the last three years. It took less than a week for her to call it home.
Memorials may be directed to Dorothy's favorite charities: Echo Hill Presbyterian Church, Camp Courageous, American Red Cross, SBMEF of the American Business Women's Association, or the charity of the donor's choice. The family requests no flowers.
Love always.

To the Herrington Kids. I am so sorry for your loss of a Great Lady. I enjoyed visiting with her when we came back to CR in the summer. We will truly miss this woman we called Mother. She always expected the best of all of us and knew that we were capable if we expended the efforts. It was my privilege to be able to spend time with her on an almost daily basis these last 4 years. Nancy
When I think about Dorothy and her life, I think of faith, family, hard work, giving back, mentoring young women, investing in people, big smiles, and love. After the death of my grandmother (Doris Cornwell) 20 years ago, Dorothy quickly became my surrogate grandmother, sending me sweet notes and cards on occasion, encouraging me to reach for the stars and do my best. When I was back in Cedar Rapids for a visit, I made every attempt to visit her in her home at first, and then at Village Ridge. Dorothy will be deeply missed. She left a wonderful legacy of hope, kindness, and love.
christy wiyrick
Thank you Christy. Mom talked fondly of you often.
“The memory of the righteous is a blessing” (Proverbs 10.7).
We remember Dorothy with thankfulness. She always came to our church services at Village Ridge. Usually she was the first one there. She was a dear lady and an inspiration to all of us. We enjoyed her stories of her interesting life. We will miss her, but we rejoice in the assurance that she has come to far, far better things than anything she left behind. She is rejoicing with Jesus and the angels.
Thank you Jim and Charlotte. Your services were special to mom and your visit at St. Lukes was greatly appreciated.
Thoughts & prayers are with you. When I think of Dorothy my thoughts goes to the days of ABWA. Would attend the meetings with my grandmother Florence Williams & your mom was alway such a sweet person with a great smile.
Sandy Freese
Thank you Sandy – your grandmother was a special lady in our lives too.
I remember Dorothy through the DQ, as my Sunday school teacher, and also ABWA with my grandma, Florence Williams. Dorothy was always cheerful and fun to talk with. I remember her infectious smile, and I know she will be sorely missed. My condolences to your family.
Thank you Dave – you kind words are appreciated.
Our sympathy to all the families as they move through this time of transition. Marion and Rich Patterson
Thank you Marion and Rich.
Dorothy was very special to me and to all of her “Bluebirds”! She welcomed us into her home each week for our Camp Fire and Horizon Club meetings; she camped out with us in a barn sleeping (or feigning sleep!) while we chattered well into the night!); she took us on trips to visit local colleges when we were ready to leave the nest.; she loved us–and we all knew it. The love she gave us did more than bind us to her. She bound us to each other, and that’s the mark of true specialness. Thank you, Mrs. Herrington, for everything! You will be missed and remembered.
Thank you Marilyn. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your father now.
