Dorothy M. Haaland, 89, formerly of Cedar Rapids, died Friday, January 9, 2015, in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, January 16, at Stewart Baxter Funeral & Memorial Services, 1844 1st Avenue NE, Cedar Rapids. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to service time at the funeral home on Friday. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Dorothy was born in The Bronx, New York City, on March 2, 1925, to Nicholas and Lillian Turk. She graduated from Cathedral High School in New York City and attended Fordham University.
Dorothy met Verne H. Haaland, a native of Rossie, Iowa, one night during World War II at a USO dance in New York City. She knew that he was the man she was going to marry. They were married on March 20, 1946, at Old St. Mary's Church in San Francisco. During their 67- year marriage, Dorothy and Verne enjoyed dancing, traveling, and sailing. Verne and Dorothy were charter members of St. Pius X Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids.
Dorothy loved life and laughed easily. She was a longtime employee of Sears Roebuck, and an energetic volunteer. She loved her family, animals, Christmas, music (from opera to Big Band), reading mystery novels, dancing (from the jitterbug to disco), playing bridge, and old black and white movies. She was gracious and upbeat through all of her recent health difficulties.
Survivors include three daughters, Kristin (Bob) Riedel of Waukesha, Wisconsin, Karen (Eric) Larson of Oshkosh, Wisconsin, and Monica Haaland of Eugene, Oregon; grandchildren, Natalie (Nate) Westphal, Pam Riedel, and Eric Larson, Jr.; and great-grandchildren, Parker and Liam Larson; sister-in-law, Ann Turk of New York; brother, George (Linda) Turk of Pennsylvania; and other relatives and friends.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; brother, Alfred Turk; and sister-in-law, Mary Turk.
Memorials may be directed to the American Heart Association or St. Pius X Catholic Church.
No matter the age or circumstances, it’s never easy. May faith and memories help in your healing
and daily life. What a beautiful and wonderful lady – I’m so thankful to have all of you as part of my
life’s journey. Leah Rae (Hasley) Highly
As a middle schooler at age 12 or 13, Mrs. Haaland was gracious enough to offer me my first job. Every Saturday morning, I dusted and vacuumed their Cedar Rapids home, along with any other various jobs that needed to be done. She always wore lipstick and jewelry and along with her Bronx accent and kindness, always made me feel like I was in star-status company! Mr. and Mrs. Haaland both defined the word neighbor. I am fortunate to have known both. God’s blessings and comfort upon all the family.
Sincerely,

Monica, your mom was always SO sweet to me/us when we were at your house but my particular memory of her is the way she said your name … mahNEEkah … it had such a musical quality to it. I was always happy to see her at the desk at Mercy. I will miss both of your parents. They raised a pretty great daughter.
