Don was born on October 25, 1935, in Anamosa, Iowa, the son of Everette and Della (Tenley) Koppenhaver. He graduated from Martelle Consolidated Schools in 1953. On June 15, 1953, Don married Margaret Martin at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. He farmed for the next 12 years while also attending the University of Iowa, where he graduated with a BBA degree with a major in accounting in 1967. He completed his degree in three years while raising a family of four. Don was inducted into Beta Gamma Sigma Honor Society and earned many scholarships and academic awards. He became a Certified Public Accountant in 1968.
His accounting career began at McGladrey, Hanson, Dunn & Company before starting his own public accounting firm, Koppenhaver & Associates. During his 43-year accounting career he served a term as the Cedar Rapids Chapter President of the National Association of Accountants. Don retired in 2010.
Don enjoyed having a good laugh and staying active. He loved sports, especially playing fastpitch softball as a shortstop, attending athletics events for the Mount Vernon teams, coaching Babe Ruth League baseball, and keeping himself fit. Don enjoyed the outdoors with fishing trips to Canada, and spending time with Margaret at their cabin in Guttenberg. He was an avid gardener, and especially liked growing tomatoes, pumpkin blossoms, cucumbers, fruit trees, peonies, and gladiolas.
He was a lifelong member of Linn Grove Presbyterian Church where he served as an elder and Sunday school teacher. Don and Margaret also lead worship services together at Hallmark Care Center.
Preceding him in death are his parents, his wife of 68 years, Margaret, and sisters, Helen (Faye) Nielson, Doris (Bruce) Ingels and Lois (Elmer) Stolte.
The family would like to thank the staff of Lisbon Rehabilitation Center of Lisbon and Cherry Ridge for the exceptional care provided to Don during his time with them.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you.
I am so sorry for your loss.
Your dad was a great guy. He was my Babe Ruth baseball coach when I was 13.
May he rest in peace.
We are so sorry to hear about Don. He was such a good person who was very easy to talk to. While he will be greatly missed by all of you, there are many wonderful memories that you will always carry with you.

Don was a good man, and a very capable, professional CPA, with a great sense of humor. We shared many laughs. I am glad to have known him and will remember him fondly. A memorial has been sent to Linn Grove Presbyterian Church. Sympathies to the family.
Gary, Karol,Scott, Ann:
Our thoughts are with you on the loss of your parents. Don and Margaret were remarkable people and very notable contributors to the Linn Grove family life. I remember great humor and I can see your parents with big smiles on their faces. Thank you for everything they have done and accomplished!

Don was a great guy with the best sense of humor. Working for him was a pleasure. He respected and was repected by many. As I recall, he loved his job saying numbers don’t lie. He had a wonderful laugh and loved a good joke. He will be missed.
Don and Margaret were our dear friends. We could call and say let’s go out in an hour and we all would be ready. We had so, so much fun with them, the sky was the limit with them. Don is happy once again as he is with his Margaret. I loved them both so much and they will be missed by so many. Till we meet again, I love you both.
My heartfelt sympathy,
Annamae
“Donnie” Koppenhaver was my bus driver for several years. At the time the style was to place young farmers’ hats over a gallon pail so they were puffed up squarely on your head. One of my first memories of him was wearing a blue and white polka dot starched farmer’s hat. And by the way the kids on the bus all loved him.
I also remember him at Linn Grove where he and Student Pastor Gene Harbaugh became fast friends. I remember seeing a note to Gene where Don had closed by saying “In Him” the capitalization of the word “him” indicated they were friends in Christ. Don was a friend to many “ in Christ”.
Another memory of Don was when he stepped up to fill the large shoes of Bill Goudy in the tribute to Jesus. Don’s faith and caring shone forth as he so aptly carried Bill’s legacy forward.
Finally, the professional work of Don impacts my family today because Renee’s firm was born from Koppenhaver and Pearson.
Don always seemed genuinely happy to see people, was a pillar in sustaining Linn Grove’s mission in the world and was a wonderful human being. To all your family, I grieve with you in his loss.
Don was knowledgeable, respectful, and fun to be around. He will be missed and we are all better to have known Don. He was knowledgeable, respectful, quick witted, and fun to be around.
