Donald George "Don" Henik, 79 of Lisbon, died Wednesday January 2, 2008 in his Lisbon home from natural causes. Funeral Mass 10:30 a.m., Monday at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Mount Vernon. Friends may call Sunday from 3:00 until 5:00 p.m., at Morgan Funeral and Cremation Choices, Mount Vernon Chapel. The Wake Service and the military rites begin Sunday at 5:00 p.m., in the chapel. Private burial will be Monday at St. John the Baptist Catholic Cemetery, Lisbon. Don is survived by his daughter Darcy Henik of Lisbon, son Darin of Arizona, granddaughter Alexa Ralls, two great grandsons Zane and Xander Ralls all of Lisbon, many many cousins, and extended family. Preceding Don in death were his parents George and Julia Slach Henik, and his first and second wives Virginia Elaine Rieger and Luanne Nemecek. Don was born May 11, 1928 in Cedar Rapids. He graduated from Lisbon High School in 1946. Don was an active member of the Lisbon Future Farmers of America and earned the award as an American Farmer (FFA) in 1946. He served during the Korean War as a medic with the U.S. Army, from 1952 until his honorable discharge in 1954. He married Elaine Rieger in 1951. She died in 1962. He married Luanne Nemeck in 1965. She died in 1991. Don farmed the Rieger Century farm north of Lisbon until his retirement in 1994. He was a member and served as Chaplain for many years, with the Cyclops American Legion Post #109 of Lisbon. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus of Cedar Rapids and an active member of the Linn County Farm Bureau, where he served on the Board of Directors. He was a member of the Lisbon Historical Society. Don was a life-long member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. Don loved the earth and what it produced. He belonged to "Red Power", a McCormack- International antique farm machinery club. His happiness revolved around his family and especially his great grandsons. A memorial fund has been established.
Don was a very nice man who always took the time to say hello and see how you were doing. God Bless him for his acts of kindness. He will be missed by many.
