Visitation: 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, October 11, 2017, at the funeral home. Private Family Burial: Mount Vernon Cemetery.
Survivors include his wife of over 63 years, Shirley; children, Douglas (Kelly) Thumm of Aurora, Colorado, and Becky (Kevin) Whitman of Mount Vernon; grandchildren, Ryan (Tasha) Whitman of Mount Vernon, and Karissa (Brad) Walker of North Liberty; great-grandchildren, Adalynn and Mia Whitman, and Charlie Walker; siblings, Byron (Charlene) and Darrel (Betty) Thumm; and many extended family, friends, and neighbors.
Delmar V. Thumm was born March 10, 1934, on a farm near Stanwood, to Luther and Pauline (Kinyon) Thumm. He graduated from Tipton High School in 1952, and married Shirley Thoeming on January 8, 1954, in Tipton. He worked as a truck driver/grounds man and later a rubber goods manager for I.E (now Alliant Energy) for 34 years until his retirement in 1997.
He enjoyed bi-yearly trout fishing trips to northeast Iowa, yearly trips to Casa Grande, Arizona, to visit friends, and attending his grand- and great-grandchildren's activities. Delmar also liked doing word searches, gardening vegetables, and visiting and sharing 'big fish' stories with friends during coffee time at Gwen's.
Delmar was preceded in death by his parents; son, David J. Thumm; and brother, Charles.
The family would like to thank Hospice of Mercy and Hallmark Care Center for their impressive and wonderful care of Delmar.
Memorials may be directed to the David Thumm Memorial Scholarship through Mount Vernon School Foundation.
My sympathy to the family. I enjoyed the times working with Delmar at the 6th Street Plant.

Shirley, Becky and Kevin,
My most sincere sympathy. I’m so sorry for your loss. I will always remember Delmar’s devilment, laugh, and stories….he always had something going. I remember the time he told me he had dressed up as an elf, of all things, at a Christmas party. I can just see him doing that, but if he laughed, it was a sure give away. Always had fun in his heart.
He will be missed. Enjoy the fun times and good memories.
