Dean Loomis

C. Dean "Shorty" Loomis, 72, of Mount Vernon, died Thursday, March 24, 2005 in the Veteran's Administration Hospital in Iowa City from complications of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease. A Ceremony of Remembering for Dean will be held in conjunction with the Ceremony for his dear friend Shirley Loomis DuRos scheduled for 4:00 p.m., Saturday, (3-26-05) at Morgan Funeral and Cremation Choices Mount Vernon Chapel. The family will begin greeting friends at 3:00 p.m. in the Chapel. Private family burial Monday, in the Mt. Vernon Memorial Cemetery with military rites. Surviving Dean are his daughters: Sharren Loomis-Hawtrey from Mount Vernon, and Karren and her husband Jim Gibson from Woodward; six grandchildren: Spencer, Madison, Darby, Brody, Brittany, and Darren; four step grandchildren: Adrienne, Elle, Bailey, and Beth; one step great grandson Kainen; a sister Betty and her husband Don Boyer of Cedar Rapids; and a sister-in-law Joyce Loomis of Mount Vernon. Preceding Dean in death were his parents, his son Darren, a grandson Barry, and a brother Lloyd, and his special friend Shirley Loomis-DuRos who died Tuesday, March 22, 2005. Dean was born August 13, 1932 in Douds, the third child of Glen and Mabel Groves Loomis. Dean graduated from Keosauqua High School in 1950. He served on board ship with the United States Navy during the Korean Conflict. Dean married Shirley Lowe in 1956 at Mount Vernon. They were later divorced. He was a hog buyer for Patrick Cudahy Meats, and was a salesman for Justice Brothers automotive chemicals. Dean drove for Charter Coaches of Cedar Rapids, Airport Shuttle Service, and the Mount Vernon Schools retiring in 2000. Dean was one of a kind. He will always be remembered for his jovial personality and keen wit. Dean was a major sports enthusiast. Always an avid Cubs fan, he eagerly awaited opening day. He was a great Mount Vernon Mustang supporter, loved the Hawkeyes and Chicago Bears. A memorial fund in Dean's honor has been established. On-line condolences to: www.morganfuneralchoices.com
