David E. Carter, 87, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, passed away on Tuesday, August 8, 2023, at Mercy Medical Center, Cedar Rapids. Gathering of Family and Friends: 4:30-6:30 p.m. Wednesday, August 16, 2023, at the Stewart Baxter Funeral Home, Cedar Rapids. Private Family Inurnment: Linwood Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
David E. Carter was born on December 6, 1935, to Delmar J. and Opal (Ellis) Carter. He married Sylvia Ann Svaldi in the Danforth Chapel on the University of Iowa Campus in 1956.
Dave lived a long life. After finishing college at University of Iowa in the late 1950s, he began his working career at WSUI Radio. Shortly after, he moved over to KCRG and transitioned into television news reporting, in the days when television was still a relatively newer thing with more local programming. After being there for around 15 years he was recruited by Sister Mary Lawrence Hallagan, at Mercy Medical Center to come and form an Audio-Visual Services department. This led to developing educational films for nursing staff and patients. Later when satellite became more available, there were many CEU events held at Mercy for staff to obtain their continuing education credits. Mercy became a hub of sorts for surrounding communities' medical staff to come and attend these events. Dave was in charge of the setup and all things involved in these events, along with many other duties. As years went by, technology changed and became more computerized, for example, in the older days when slides were shown on a projection screen, now it was projected through a laptop in PowerPoint. Dave was able to be the go-to person for all of that and oftentimes had to come to the rescue to fix problems in the heat of the moment.
After working well beyond normal retirement years, Dave retired at around age 79.After retirement he enjoyed working on his computer at home, reading, and listening to the radio. He later helped care for his wife, Sylvia, who dealt with some dementia issues before her death nearly four years ago.
Dave had a lot of health issues over the years, but always kept a good attitude through it all.Working at Mercy for 40 years, he accumulated many work friends and acquaintances. He will be missed by many of his old-timer Mercy co-workers.
Dave is survived by his children, Grant Carter of Cedar Rapids and Neal Carter of Cedar Rapids; grandchildren, Amber Carter, and Curtis (Alexa) Winsor of Virginia; great-grandchildren, Ayden Vaughn, Alena Harris, Theodore Winsor, and Andersen Underwood; and sister, Jenni Fauchier.
Dave was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and son, Blair Carter.
The family of Dave would like to thank the doctors and staff at Mercy Medical Center and Iowa Eye Center for their extraordinary care and compassion over the past few months.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Mercy Medical Center Foundation in Dave's name.
We are deeply sorry for your loss ~ Stewart Baxter Funeral & Memorial Services – Cedar Rapids
I remember Del and Opal Carter , you and your brother Dave, Jenni. I grew up going to the Presbyterian Church in Manchester and remember well your mom and Ruth McCormac from Sunday School.
I was shy but your mom was so enthusiastic and welcoming it made me feel comfortable there.
Your brother Dave I remember being on TV and I remember you too. You had such wonderful parents!
The last time I saw your mom was at Gladys Sheldon’s funeral. After the service your mom encouraged us to stay for the luncheon. “Gladys would have wanted you to.” She said. I would have loved to have stayed longer, but my husband had to get back to the farm and I had to return to Sumner where I worked at the post office.
People like your Mom and Dad and Gladys are rare today. They meant so much to me and I cherish their memory.
I wish you peace with your brother passing away, Jenni. I pray you are doing ok.

We enjoyed David at Mercy so many years ago. He was always there! Always taking pictures. Fond memories of the Mercy Team! Don & Mary Anne Nelson
Drs Nelson, Thank you for taking time to write a comment about Dad. You both have probably known dad for many years being in and around Mercy. Thank you. Grant Carter
Dear Debbie, thanks for taking time to write a comment. Sue McCormac was able to stop down to the visitation. That was very nice. I remember being a guest in grandma Opal’s Sunday School on occasion when we visited over a weekend to Manchester. I think the classroom had like an accordian folding divider door to make 2 classrooms out of one and one time we combined both classes into one. Thank you. Grant Carter
So sorry to see that your Dad passed away. Growing up on E Union St in Manchester we saw lots of the Carters Such great people!!💔
Dear Pat, thanks for taking time to write a note. Dad will be missed by many. Thank you. Grant
I had the great good fortune to work with Dave when I was doing my Masters Degree project. I wrote a documentary about a Civil Defense exercise called “Operation Smokey Hotel.” Dave helped me with various technical problems and did the stand-up narration for the entire program. I can provide a copy to anyone who is interested, A friend indeed. Thanks, Dave!
Robert Thorpe
Grant and family, I remember Dave well, as he was “Team Mercy”, always there to help with anything needed. A good quite man, I am very sorry for your loss. Sincerely, Elaine Ferguson
Dear Robert, thanks for taking time to write a comment. Dad will be missed by many folks. Many Mercy folks still remember him well after he retired. Thank you, Grant Carter
Grant, My sincere sympathy on the passing of your Dad. What would Mercy ever have done without him? He was so kind, humble, tech savvy and always willing to help you out. Lots of fond memories of working with him and you as well. Both of you special people!!
God Bless.
Lou Ann Weber
Lou Ann, thank you for posting a comment. Dad will be missed by many. I ran into Grace H. a couple of weeks ago when I was with dad at a doctor’s appointment so we had a mini reminiscing session in the waiting room that day. It was fun to hear all and talk with Grace. I remember the days of you and Grace at the front desks there when P.T. was on Ground Level. Take care, Grant
Grant and family – I’m so sorry for your loss. Dave was a life saver for so many of us at Mercy – always there to solve our terrifying last-minute technological problems. The Mercy Education Center worked flawlessly because of him. Dave always offered a smile and I’ll always remember him as a quiet, competent, steady and kind coworker and friend. When our son Luke was born at Mercy, Dave came to our room and made a little video so we could share the news with our daughters at home who had chickenpox and couldn’t visit us. That was Dave. My sympathy, Cathy Gullickson
Dear Cathy, thank you for taking time to write a note. Dad will be missed by many. I hope you and Mark are doing well. I imagine you are deep into the grandparenting role. Take care
Grant and family, our sincere condolences on the passing of your dad. He was always available to help with AV needs and capturing pictures of Mercy’s milestones. God bless.
Dear Mark and JoEllen, Thank you for your thoughts and taking the time to post a note. He will be missed by many. We had a mini old-timers reunion at the funeral visitation. He would have enjoyed it. Thanks, Grant
Dear Family,
We were saddened to learn of Dave’s passing. He was a wonderful man and
broadcaster. We knew Dave and Sylvia
because they both grew up in Manchester and graduated from Manchester High School in 1954.
Our prayers are for all of you.
Mike and Sylvia Carr
Manchester, Iowa
Dear Mike and Sylvia, thank you for taking time to comment and for thinking of dad. He had a few visitors from Manchester stop in to the visitation. I miss coming to Manchester to visit the grandparents. Thank you, Grant Carter
Ahhh… the Carter family.. wonderful people..
Grew up with Dave’s folks, Del and Opal, in the church in Manchester. They were very special people. My folks and the Carters were close. Because of that, church, and the fact they lived a block and a half away resulted in Jenni and I being very close friends. Dave’s Aunt Lois babysat me. Of course, I knew Dave, but because he was older, not well enough. Always respectful and a very nice gentleman. Quite intelligent and knew what he was doing. Wonderful wife Sylvia. Good ‘down to earth’ people. I’m sure Dave touched many people’s lives.
My sympathy to Jenni and Dave’s family.
So sad to lose the good people in this world…
RIP, Dave. Hi to Del, Opal, Aunt Lois and Sylvia.
❤️ Sue McCormac, Manchester
Dear Sue, thanks for taking the time to drive down to Cedar Rapids. It was good to hear the Carter’s were good to you over the years. I have a card and email headed your way too. Thanks, Grant Carter
I was a broadcasting engineer for KCRG radio and TV ; the station was in the Miller Building on First and First west. Dave put on the news and I was one of his camera operators. Dave was so professional and such a decent employee, a role model that any employer would be happy to have in their employment. Dave taught me so much about how a broadcaster needed to appear on air. We shared some photo interests and I traded a camera of mine for one of his . We had a lot in common. But, that’s how Dave was with his peers; he could read you and immediately gravitate to your level of need and understanding. He was a fine leader and when he left the station, I was at loose ends for a while. Dave’s demeanor gave KCRG a good reputation. He will be missed and I was so sad to learn of his passing. I just wanted his family to know how much we all like him.
Rolf Christophersen, Solon, IA
Dear Rolf, thank you for your concern and taking the time to write. I work at Mercy and one of my volunteers that helps me is Craig O’brien who worked at KCRG years ago with dad. He’s had many old stories to tell also. Thank you. Grant
Along with the other Mercy people who have left messages, I want to add that I also have soecuak memories of Dave, always there when needed and always with a smile. He was a great member to have on the Mercy team.
Sorry I was unable to attend his services, Grant. You had a special dad, as you knew.
Betty De Brewer
Betty, thank you for your thoughts and concern. Dad will be missed by many.
This is an addendum to my message just now–my computer coined a new word for my memories of Dave–they were and are special, not soecuak, whatever that might be. I think Dave would get a laugh out of this. I hope you do too, Grant.
