Dale Glen McDonald, 91, passed away on Friday, August 3, 2012, at his daughter's home in Maplewood, Minnesota. Dale was born in Watkins, Iowa, on February 3, 1921, to Archie and Emma (Monson) McDonald. He graduated from Cedar Rapids Roosevelt High School in June 1939. He married Janette Holmes on December 13, 1941, in Kahoka, Missouri. His wife preceded him in death in May 2008. At the beginning of World War II, he enlisted in the Navy and served on the USS Hillary P. Jones as a pharmacist's mate. After serving the duration of the war, Dale attended Coe College on G.I. bill. He then served an apprenticeship with Rinderknecht Construction as a carpenter. He began his business as a homebuilder and remodeler in 1953, and remained in business for over 50 years. Dale was a 50 year member of Mizpah Lodge (A.F. and A.M.) and the El Kahir Shrine. He was a past president of the Director's Staff, past commodore of the Cedar Boat Club, and served on the board of directors of the Ellis YMCA. He was a longtime member of the Elks. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, boating, ice skating, swimming, and spending time with family and friends. He will always be remembered as a loving husband, father, and grandfather. Dale is survived by his son, Dan McDonald of Cedar Rapids and Belle Plaine; daughter, Jodi and her husband, Brad White of Maplewood, Minnesota. He has one granddaughter, Janette White of Eagan, Minnesota. He was preceded in death by his sister, Lois McDonald Dick. Family and friends will gather from 2-4 p.m. on Saturday, August 11, 2012, at Stewart Baxter Funeral & Memorial Services, Cedar Rapids. A private family interment at Fort Snelling, Minnesota is planned. In lieu of flowers, Dale requested memorials be made in his memory to El Kahir Transportation Fund, 1400 Blairs Ferry Road NE, Cedar Rapids, Iowa52402, Mizpah Lodge, or a charity of the donor's choice.
